  1. Contacts database Brussels Support Training – 12 September 2013

  2. Agenda Agenda 0. Not to lose you along the way Background + BvD purpose 2. IPs 3. Coverage How ? 5. Lydia takeover - Strong points/USPs/in-soft functionalities/future enhancements CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  3. Useful Keys to me not losing you right away : IPs = Sources = Information Providers. UCI = Unique Contact Identifier (also “known” as UPI = Unique Person Identifier ) Vadis = Our data-mining partner, in charge of the UCI attribution + the “Best merged” processes Best Merged Person = process of identifying, choosing and selecting information from different sources about ONE individual Best Merged Function = process of identifying, choosing and selecting information from different sources about ONE function held by ONE individual within a given company Membership = Directorship = link as provided by one or more IPs between a person and a position within a company DMC = Director(s)/Manager(s)/Contact(s) CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  4. Background to the CONTACTS database + What key purpose ? Background Demand to grow personal contacts by getting to know the people known by the people you know Have a view on management relationships. See how unrelated individuals are connected in the market. Building a DB of financial information  IPs had access to reports containing information on contacts Demand + means = Creation of the contacts DB CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  5. Background to the CONTACTS database + What key purpose ? BvD’s purpose Due to obvious DB size and tracking reasons, BvD’s “CONTACTS DB” relies 99.9% on “external” IPs. The aim is to gather, structure and publish information  yes to data manipulation gathered from IPs  yes to data added value created @BvD  no to direct data collection CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  6. Information Providers • External sourcing : • Via local IPs • Belgium = B-Information. Spain = Informa, Italy = Honyvem/CERVED etc. • Via international IPs • Reuters, World’VestBase • Via Informal Sources • NetProspex, D&B. • Difference in numbers and quality of data • Much « noise » • In-soft example : US942404110 • Note : Hidden by default in softs unless confirmed by another IP • Future Plan : “Very Formal” sources – Belfirst? CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  7. Information Providers • Own sourcing at BvD: • WebsiteWatcherproject • Project starting point: Websites of companies are the main source of comparison for clients when judging Orbis. • Outcome : on a weekly basis, constant update of top 500 Orbis companies by tracking the given companies’ corporate governance WebPages (alert system when change) • Via Innodata (collaboration since 2009) • Treating about 19,000 listed & private companies and 3,000 banks. • Extreme-measures manual creation • When urgent/necessary requests, possibility of artificially creating a record. • Little follow-up possible, difficultly explained to clients. CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  8. Coverage Coverage Some figures over time, that show the growth of this database. September 2009: 88M links (for 58M companies on Orbis) April 2010: 124M links (for 63M companies on Orbis) leading to 65M distinct contacts and 99M distinct memberships March 2012: 194M links (for 96M companies on Orbis)leading to 90M distinct contacts and 145M distinct memberships September 2013: 236M links (for 118M companies on Orbis) leading to 106M distinct contacts and 211M distinct memberships  2/1 functions/person ratio Focus : New IPs for more coverage (& more companies on Orbis) + increased communication with IPs to gain full knowledge of their operating processes. CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  9. Coverage Number of distinct contacts per company on Orbis. September 2013 CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  10. Coverage Number of distinct contacts per company on Orbis. Note thatwenowalso have coverage tables on ourproducts. In-soft demo ?  Home  Help  Coverage CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  11. How is the CONTACTS database created? • How is the CONTACTS database created? • For board/committee members, executive management positions, advisors and individuals shareholders •  Different input, same output • By harmonizingthe data and applying some unique BvD added value, by merging different raw entities into one final output, and allocating a unique contact/person identifier (UCI) in cooperation with data mining partner Vadis CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  12. How is the CONTACTS database created? • Data harmonization • Gathering and structuring the data received from over 95sources = over 95different ways to receive information. • 95input formats into ONE output format (raw indexation) • 125 existing BvD fields to play with, and always more coming (Age buckets for NL) CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  13. How is the CONTACTS database created? • Added value of BvD: preparation of the data at source • Country-specific algorithms to differentiate individuals from companies. • Country-Specific gender estimation based on a semi-fixed first-name DB. • Jean in UK = F • Jean in FR = M • Standardization of original received function descriptions. • Standardized codes for free text “labels”/functions. • Quality checks (at import of feeds for Contacts global indexation) CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  14. How is the CONTACTS database created? • Identification and merging process by Vadis Consulting • Which records relate to the same contact and/or function? • Vadis uses all available data: directorship, but also ownership and company information from Orbis. • Not just simple name comparison – example John Smith (there are thousands). • Date of birth or home address are valuable extra information. But also location of company and notion of corporate groups is interesting and useful. • To determine the same function, our standardized function code is important. • Isolate each contact and allocate a Unique Contact Identifier (UCI). • In the feed Vadis returns to BvD, we have the ‘best merged’ data on contacts and functions • Meaning we keep the most complete & coherent contact and function information taking into account the information received from all sources concerning a same person. • Build an historical database from some sources (effective from Feb-Mar 2013) CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  15. How is the CONTACTS database created? • Example of Best Merged Person • Selected Raw data received from all IPs on Dominique Carnoy: • End result after Vadis Process: CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  16. How is the CONTACTS database created? • Example of Best Merged Function • Selected Raw data received from all IPs on Bill Gates’s positions @ Microsoft Corp : • End result after Vadis Process: • Result in-soft: CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  17. How is the CONTACTS database created? • Added value of BvD: clean-up of the data (1) • Feedback loop: to correct wrong or missing matches • Sometimes, the process we put in place with Vadis is incapable of detecting a match obvious to the human eye: • The FeedbackLoop process allows us to correct this anomaly. Checks are done every week, but impossible to keep track for 100M+ UPIs !! •  Your feedback is important! CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  18. How is the CONTACTS database created? • Added value of BvD: clean-up of the data (2) • Cleaning of merged job functions to try to avoid repetition of similar function descriptions • Semi-fixed DB to apply a priority for a function label over another • A: Exact same label / full inclusion of label within another • B: Manual choice (ex: Chairman of the Board vs. Member of the Board) • Example: raw data • Example: Orbis CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  19. How is the CONTACTS database created? BvD – Vadis Timeline: 1. Saturday-Sunday Week 0 : Indexation of all IPs data & incorporation in the “raw” DB 2. Monday-Tuesday Week 1 : QC checks on “raw” 3. Wednesday Week 1 : Delivery of “raw” to Vadis 4. Thursday Week 1 – Tuesday Week 2 : Vadis data treatments (from “raw” to “finished”) 5. Wednesday Week 2 : Delivery of “finished” by Vadis to BvD 6. From Friday Week 2 on : available for products to update with new “finished” contacts (Orbis: indexation starting Saturday, ending Sunday. 2-3 days for “nettest”/”setup” checks, updated on official website on Wednesday-Thursday Week 3) CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  20. Strong points • Strong points (1) • In-soft demo : US942404110 • User-friendly inter-connection between Company and Contacts databases (when in Company report, a simple click on an individual will lead you to his Contacts report) • (Note : In the DMC section we do not present the advisors and pure individual shareholders that are also part of our Contacts database.) • Without actually launching his contact report, possibility to unfold information related to his position in the company • Via filters, you can easily restrict the • display to persons holding positions • you are interested in. • Existence of a mailing wizard in the Companies database to reach your person(s) of interest CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  21. Strong points • Strong points (2) • User-friendly options: • to launch a web searchusing name of D/M/C and company name • to launch a search on LinkedIn also using these names as parameters • (Needs huge improvements – search based on Orbis, results depending on client’s LinkedIn profile) • Notification of when a D/M/C is also a shareholder, via special icon • July 2013 : plan of including a similar icon in the Ownership report when a shareholder is also part of the DMC section • Thanks to our standardized functions we allow to search for specific boards, committees or executive departments. Either all directors / managers / contacts or else chairmen and/or C-suite members. CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  22. Strong points • We started creating a full history of a director’s past functions (presented in the ‘Previous’ section). In-soft example : BE0440734148 CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  23. Strong points Example: Dominique Carnoy’s report in Orbis.  P039589356 You have a quick overview of all current and previous positions. CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  24. Strong points • Strong points (3) • In the Contact report we have a section Related persons: showing the relations for a contact, up to three levels • (on the fly and time consuming). CONTACTS database – Internal use only

  25. Good to know Good to know • Not all gathered data gets published • Private/sensitive info: IPs having different local legislations on data collection etc (ZA & Passport numbers ; Colombian privacy law on name search etc.) • Do NOT promote our Contacts database as mailing database! • NetProspex is the main source delivering email addresses for the contacts. We are obliged to keep them informed on massive downloads of these email addresses. • Current addition: In the user guide we’ll gradually add documentation on the collection of DMC data by our different IPs. • Current addition: together with Vadis we are working on linking our UPIs to the World Compliance database. To flag persons that potentially could be PEPs or be related to illicit activities such as money laundering, fraud, arms dealing, narcotics trafficking … CONTACTS database – Internal use only
