Life Cycle Assessment of Laboratory Concrete Specimens Waste: A Case Study

This case study explores the issue of laboratory concrete waste and its environmental impact, particularly in terms of CO2 emissions. The study collects data on concrete waste from 2011 to 2017 and proposes recycling and reuse as potential solutions. Concrete specimens can be directly reused or crushed for landfill. Innovation and awareness in civil engineering programs are crucial for sustainable waste management.

Laboratory concrete specimens waste, a case study on life cycle assessment Han Aylie – HarijantoSetiawan - Petr Hajek Diponegoro University, Semarang, Indonesia Faculty of Engineering, UniversitasAtma Jaya Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta, Indonesia Faculty of Civil Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic Central Europe towards Sustainable Building Prague 2019 (CESB19) July 2-4, 2019, Prague

  2. Han A.L.- Setiawan H. - Hajek P. Background • Laboratory concrete waste becomes a problem due to the quantity of specimen’s testing, boosted by the fast progress in physical structural building developments A week’s waste production from a single, medium categorized laboratory Central Europe towards Sustainable Building Prague 2019 (CESB19) July 2-4, 2019, Prague

  3. Han A.L.- Setiawan H. - Hajek P. • Cement a major source of pollution Greenhouse gas (CO2) Cement production Dust, resulting in air and water pollution Land conservation disturbance due to mining of basic materials Negative aspect of cement Central Europe towards Sustainable Building Prague 2019 (CESB19) July 2-4, 2019, Prague

  4. Han A.L.- Setiawan H. - Hajek P. • Yearly data showed an increasing trend for all types of specimens Concrete waste data collecting between 2011-2017 Central Europe towards Sustainable Building Prague 2019 (CESB19) July 2-4, 2019, Prague

  5. Han A.L.- Setiawan H. - Hajek P. • CO2volume is determined based on the equation: • emission = Vcement x Cclinker x EFclinker • Where: • Vcement : the volume of cement produced (m3) • Cclinker : the clinker faction within the cement • EFclinker: the clinker emission factor • The calculation of cement consumption was based on the assumption of a 30 MPa concrete cylindrical strength Central Europe towards Sustainable Building Prague 2019 (CESB19) July 2-4, 2019, Prague

  12. Han A.L.- Setiawan H. - Hajek P. Conclusion • Material laboratories can’t be ignored as potential source of concrete waste, and 7 years’ data collecting concluded that the future tendency shows an increase. • A solution to implement LCA should be found. • At this stage recycling is an option, while reusing can be conducted by crushing of concrete for land-fill. • Reuse in its original form needs innovation and creativity in absorbing the tested specimens. • Socialization of awareness should be integrated in the civil-engineering study programs Central Europe towards Sustainable Building Prague 2019 (CESB19) July 2-4, 2019, Prague
