  1. Microseismic Research at NORSAR Anders Dahle Volker Oye Michael Roth Daniela Kuehn Hom Nath Gharti volker@norsar.no

  2. Previous projects within microseismic research • SIP - Microseismic Reservoir Monitoring, RCN funded (1999-2004) • 3D Microseismic Reservoir Monitoring, RCN funded (2000-04) PhD fellowship • KMB - Microseismic Emissions – Heartbeats of a Reservoir (2002-05) RCN/Industry funded • BIP - Monitoring and Analysis of Production-Induced Seismicity, (2006-08) RCN/Industry funded • BILAT – Real-time Earthquake Monitoring at 3km Depth in the San Andreas Fault, California (2005-06) RCN funded • USGS NEHRP – Small Scale Fault Structure from SAFOD Area Microearthquakes Combining Waveform Correlation and Shear Wave Splitting Analysis (2007)

  3. Ongoing projects within microseismic research • KMB – Active Use of Passive Seismics, RCN/Industry funded (2006-2011), including PhD student • Åknes rock slide monitoring (kommune/SFF funded, long-term) • Safety Monitoring of CO2 Storages Using Microseismicity and 4D Seismic Modelling (SafeCO2) NFR/Industry funded (2009-2014) • EU FP7 Energy – (GEISIR) - Geothermal Engineering Integrating Mitigation of Induced Seismicity in Reservoirs (head institute: GFZ, in cooperation with many European institutes, 2010-13)

  4. Other activities • Akershus University College , M.Sc in ’Energy and Environment’ including geothermal energy • CGER - Norwegian Center for Geothermal Energy Research, consortium coordinated by the University of Bergen, Institute of Mathematics) • Continued collaboration with USGS on SAFOD monitoring • Collaboration agreement with IESE, University of Auckland, NZ (downhole installations and data analysis)

  5. Åknes instable rock slope Microseismic monitoring of the unstable rock-slope at Åknes, Møre & Romsdal • Permanent microseismic network • Objectives: • Monitoring of slide-related events • Near real-time processing • Event localization and analysis • Input for early-warning system

  6. Åknes instable rock slope • Permanent microseismic monitoring network • 8 3C geophones, operational since October 2005 • Contineous monitoring until August 2006, later on triggered-mode monitoring with 1 ms sampling • 1-10 microseismic events per day • 1-5 high quality events per week • Realtime data transfer and processing • Event detection and classification, but no localization • Calibration experiment October 2006 slope: 35-40 ºarea: ~1300 x 600 mvolume: ~ 40-70 mil. m3

  7. Installation of a broad-band station AKN

  8. Pyhäsalmi ore mine The Pyhäsalmi ore mine • Copper- and Zinc-pyrite surrounded by quartz rich felsic volcanics • 1.3 Mio tons of ore per year • Production levels down to 1500 m • In-mine network since January 2003

  9. Pyhäsalmi ore mine The monitoring network • 12 vertical and 6 3C geophones (ISS) in a 3D configuration • 3000 Hz sampling frequency • About 1500 events per month (including blasts) • -2 < Mw < 1.5

  10. Pyhäsalmi ore mine Real-time data processing Event detection, Arrival times of seismic phases, Polarization angles, + Velocity model (homo/3D) = Event location, origin time

  12. Pyhäsalmi ore mine Seismic events 2003 with location errors < 15 m N View from East View from North E W S scale: source radius color: origin time View from West View from South

  13. Pyhäsalmi ore mine Seismic events 2003 with location errors < 15 m N View from East View from North E W S scale: source radius color: origin time View from West View from South

  14. Pyhäsalmi ore mine Monitoring of microseismicity in Europe’s deepest ore mine - Visualization (NORSAR Visualization software)

  15. Tasks that NORSAR is interested inwith respect to AIM • Test and compare new automatic phase-picking routines • Localization of microseismic events at Åknes rock slope. Setup of 3D velocity model required • Automatic localization of microseismic events in anisotropic media • Compare moment tensor analysis with NORSAR software on other data (Åknes data is too complex)
