  1. NORSARKjeller, Norway Type of organisation: Research Institute Specialising in: Real-time transmission and automatic processing of seismic data from a network of arrays and single stations. Norway’s National Data Center for the CTBT. More specifically: Research on methods for explosion and earthquake monitoring. Rapid event locations and magnitude estimation. Participant in EU projects NERIES, SAFER and TRANSFER. Also specialising in: Seismotectonics, earthquake hazard and risk In-house capacity: Staff of 45, 10 researchers in Seismology TEWS Info Day, 31 Jan 2006, Paris

  2. Potential Interest/Contribution to TEWS • Real-time processing of data from seismic stations and arrays for obtaining early warnings of earthquakes that could potentially cause tsunamis. • Obtain rapid event locations, depths and magnitude estimates from local, regional or globally distributed seismic networks of arrays and single stations. • Application of global data from the CTBTnetwork (IMS) and other on-line data sources in the context of tsunami warning. NORSAR has already access to and experience with data from the IMS. • Training and supervision of scientists andstudents within the topics listed above, e.g., like the TA component in NERIES. • Contact point: Dr. Tormod Kværna, Program Manager • Email: tormod@norsar.no • Tel: +47 63805900 • Url: www.norsar.no

  3. Desired Level of Cooperation • There is no doubt that any TEWS needs strong input from seismology! • We are interested to participate in any proposed effort where real-time processing of seismic data is included. • We can also participate in evaluating tsunamigenic potentials, based on recent experience from a study of the Sumatra-Andaman Arc.
