  3. Acesulfame Potassium • Commonly referred to as “ace-K” • 1967 – Accidentally discovered at Hoechst AG • 180 to 200 Times sweeter than sugar (S.E.) • Heat stable • Moderately acidic aftertaste • Used as a stand alone, but best in blends with other H.I.S.

  4. Aspartame • 1965 - Accidentally discovered at G.D. Searle • 180 to 200 X S.E. • FDA Approved 1981 – Tabletop, gum, breakfast cereal • FDA Approved 1983 – Sodas • FDA Approved 1993 – Other beverages, baked goods, confections • Slower onset of sweetness, longer sweetness duration than sugar • Moderate metallic aftertaste

  5. Neotame • FDA Approved in 2002 • 8,000 to 13,000 X S.E. • Clean, sweet flavor • Slow onset, longer linger of sweetness with no aftertaste • Used to reduce percentages of nutritive sweeteners • Used to reduce percentages of other H.I.S. • Best value of all H.I.S.

Rebaudioside-A • Using a common trade name, Rebiana (Reb-A) • Stevia / Stevioside purified derivative • Reb-A first isolated by French chemists in 1931 • FDA issued first G.R.A.S. approval December 17, 2008 • Can use Natural claim • 400 X S.E • Residual anise aftertaste, cleaner than previous stevia powders

  7. Saccharin • 1879 – First production at Johns Hopkins University • Became popular during World War I sugar shortages • 200 X S.E. • Bitter, acidic aftertaste • Relatively quick onset, little sweetness linger • Used as stand alone; best in blends with other H.I.S.

  8. Sucralose • Discovered 1976 – Tate & Lyle at Queen Elizabeth College • FDA Approved 1998 – 15 food categories including TT • FDA Approved 1999 – general purpose sweetener • 600 X S.E. • Heat stable • Mild to no aftertaste • Used as stand alone; best in blends with other H.I.S.
