  2. 2. Why did Jesus come? Why did he “have to die”- 8:31; 9:12; Lk.24:26 The answer – To deal with sin a. Sin destroys & enslaves - intimate relationships – 10:1-12 - our view of the weak/vulnerable - 10:13-16 - slavery to wealth, status, power etc – 10:17-23 b. The consequences of sin – 9:42-50 Jesus out of love warns us

  3. c. Jesus came to deal with sin – 8:31,32; 9:31; 10:33,34,45 Jesus humbled himself to serve us so we could be free from:- 1, The consequences of sin – we can be forgiven – Lk.24:45-47 2. The power of sin – we can be free to serve God – Rom.6:16-18; Gal.5:16-18 The disciples don’t see clearly that the Christ MUST suffer – Mk.8:22-25,32

  4. 3. What does Jesus expect of his followers? a. A willingness to die – 8:34-38 Sacrifice is at the heart of the Gospel & discipleship b. A willingness to humble ourselves- 9:33-37 cf. Phil.2:6-8 c. A heart that serves – 10:35-44 Humble sacrificial service is at the heart of the Gospel & discipleship

We walk humbly the way of the Cross - sacrificial giving – 2Cor.8:9 - serving others – 1Cor.10:32-11:1 - husbands loving their wives – Eph. 5:25 - responding to injustice – 1Pet. 2:20-24 - loving one another – 1John 4:10,11 - trusting God in our weakness – 2Cor.12:9,10
