  2. Causes of the War • Imperialism: rivalry among countries for natural resources and land around the world. • Nationalism: devotion for one’s country and government. • Militarism: build up of a country’s navy and army. • Alliance system: countries making pacts to help one another if war.

  3. Immediate Cause • Austrian Arch Duke Ferdinand is assassinated by a Serbian National. Austria declares war on Serbia, Russia declares war on Austria, Germany declares war on Russia, Great Britain and France declare war on Germany. • WW I begins in 1914.

  4. Central Powers: Germany, Austria –Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Italy Allied (Entente) Russia, Great Britain and France (Italy joins later) Teams

  5. Tie Game • Western Front in Belgium ends in a stalemate because of trench warfare. No man’s land created. Battle of Somme over 1.2 million casualties. Result of machine guns, artillery and poison gas.

  6. Reasons for US Neutrality • German ancestry part of American culture. • Irish see this as an opportunity to get independence from Great Britain. • Socialists said war is only about big businesses money • Pacifists believe war is immoral. William Jennings Bryan, and the US Supreme Court.

  7. US gets Involved • Sympathy for the British suffering: common language, democracy and economic ties. • 1914 British navy blockades German trade. • 1915 German U-boats sink Allied ships. Submarine warfare kills 75,000. • May 7,1915 the Lusitania is sunk killing 1,198 civilians and 128 Americans. • March 1916 the Sussex is sunk. Germans pledge to stop sinking passenger ships. 80 Americans die. • Jan. 31 1917 German new pledge to sink any ship going to England. Threat to US.

Immediate Cause • Zimmerman Note: British intercept the Zimmerman telegraph asking Mexico to help Germany occupy the US and after the war the Germans would help defeat the US. • Russian Revolution: Russians forced out of the war by revolution in its country shifting the stalemate to favor Central Powers. US decides to help its Allies (England)

  9. America Makes the Differences • US enters the war in April 1917 on the Allies side. • Selective Service Act qualifies millions of men to serve in the war • US spends whole year training and building supplies to fight. Begin War Industrial Board to help businesses produce products for the war. • US uses convoy system to provide a naval escort for troops and supplies to Europe.

  10. US Helps End War • AEF- American Expeditionary Force led by General Pershing refuses to fight in trenches. By pushing forward, they over ran the Germans. (Battle of Belleau Woods) Heroes emerge like Sgt. York Congressional Medal of Honor. Flying Ace Eddie Rickenbacher.

  11. Effects of War at Home • War Bonds: sold to Americans to invest money to support the war. • Victory Gardens: goods grown in gardens to support war effort. • Anti-German league: Germans became the enemy, Frankfurters called hot dogs, liberty cabbage.

  12. Effects in U.S. Cont. • Espionage and Sedition Acts- passed by Congress arrested thousands for anti war sentiment. • Schenck v US 1919- Supreme Court says speech can be limited during war if creates a clear and present danger to society.

  13. Effects in U.S. • Great Migration- African Americans leave the South to take factory jobs in the North to help the war effort. • Flu Pandemic- 500,000 Americans died from influenza brought back from the war 1918-1919. • Casualties of War: 320,000 U.S. dead or wounded. • Red Scare: A.Mitchell Palmer rounds up Communist threats. Sacco-Vanzetti trial.

  14. Peace Plan • President Wilson’s 14 Points- no military build up, free seas, no alliances, league of nations to discuss problems peacefully. • Congress will not let US participate in League of Nations. Led by Senator Henry Cabot Lodge. • Treaty of Versailles ends WWI called armistice. Punishes Germany by taking away its army, forcing them to give France Alscae-Lorraine and paying 33 billion dollars in reparations for the war.
