THE ATMOSPHERE

THE ATMOSPHERE. The atmosphere is like the layers of a cake. Troposphere. The troposphere contains the gases we breath every day. It is the layer that we live in. Stratosphere. The stratosphere absorbs dangerous light from the sun. This light is called ultraviolet radiation.

  1. THE ATMOSPHERE

  2. The atmosphere is like the layers of a cake

  3. Troposphere • The troposphere contains the gases we breath every day. • It is the layer that we live in.

  4. Stratosphere • The stratosphere absorbs dangerous light from the sun. This light is called ultraviolet radiation. • Ultraviolet radiation is what causes us to get sunburns!!

  5. Mesosphere • The mesosphere lies above the Stratosphere and is the coldest part out of all the layers. • It can be -90 degrees Celsius!

  6. Thermosphere • The thermosphere is the warmest part of the atmosphere. It can be 1.700 degrees Celsius. • The thermosphere filters out x-rays and gamma rays from the sun. • Space shuttles float in this layer.

  7. Composition

  8. Our atmosphere is made up of three main types of gases. They are nitrogen, oxygen and argon.

  9. Nitrogen is 78 % of our atmosphere. It is created from decaying plants and animals, burning and eruptions from volcanoes.

  10. Oxygen is added to the atmosphere by plants through photosynthesis. • It is removed by humans, animals and plants.

  11. The rest of the atmosphere is made up by tiny amounts of methane, hydrogen, helium, neon, krypton and carbon dioxide.

  12. How do the gases of the atmosphere affect the weather?

  13. Most of the gases in the atmosphere don’t affect our weather, but carbon dioxide does. • It absorbs infrared light and heat sent to earth by the sun. • It acts as insulation to control the planet’s temperature • If there is too much carbon dioxide, the earth’s temperature will go up!

  14. Carbon dioxide absorbs infrared light and heat sent to earth by the sun. It acts as insulation to control the planet’s temperature If there is too much carbon dioxide, the earth’s temperature will go up!
