  1. A Videoconferencing Service for the German Network for Research and Education “DFN” CSMM Working Group Meeting 0 12 February 2004, CERN Gisela Maiss, Klaus Ullmann - DFN Germany

  2. Content • Application Scenarios and Demands • Architecture • DFNVC Service • Address Specification • Utilisation • Further Plans

  3. DFNVC: Application Scenarios • Working group meetings: Participants are scientific members of working groups located at different institutions, meetings on a regular or spontaneous basis • Regular meetings of university directors to save time and money • Attendance of students at lectures and participation in seminars from their home-computer • Discussion of research results over a video conference, possibility to invite external experts who join the conference via telephone

  4. DFNVC: Demands • From the user point of view • Reliable management of the MCU(s) • Ad-hoc conferences • Video quality: at least 384 Kbit/s (per user) • Audio quality: G.722 • T.120 for application sharing • Continuous Presence, Transcoding • Support for all configuration and operational problems (e.g. firewall problems) • Reservation of rooms (and MCU ports), scheduling of conferences

  5. DFNVC: Service Architecture Organisation according to scenario 3 Organisation without own zone User VC system Organisation according to scenario 1 Organisation according to scenario 2 Organisation with own zone User VC system User VC system GK VC Portal Organisation without own zone User VC system MCU (s) DCS ISDN User VC system World GK Country GK DFN GK GW to ISDN users Zone DFN

  6. DFNVC: Service Model • Who may use the service? • Users in DFN organisations and users in national / international partner organisations (guests) • How to use the service • Organisation contracts with DFN and pays flat charge according to the bandwidth of the DFNInternet connection • 3 technical usage scenarios: • Computing centres administer their users via own gatekeeper (GK) (local administrator), user support from local administrators • Users register with the gatekeeper of another organization or • with the DFN-GK and get direct support from DFN

  7. DFNVC: Operational Model • DFN - responsible for • Management of all technical components • Setting up of a dial plan for the GK structure • Provision of the VC portal • Training courses for local administrators • Hotline, mailing lists, documentations, charging • Participating Organisations - responsible for • Installation of a technical administrator • Attendance in training courses • Choice of VC end systems & operation of a gatekeeper • Training & First level support for their users

  8. DFNVC: Service Components • Same equipment in two locations (Berlin and Stuttgart) • MCUs: • Premium Equipment: • per location 2 Radvision MCU-60/G.722 with TCM 30 Audio Transcoder Board -> 240 Ports • per location 2 Radvision MVP 30 Video Boards • Standard Equipment: • per location 1 Radvision MCU-100 -> 200 Ports • Gatekeeper, Gateways and DCS • per location 1 Gatekeeper Radvision ECS 2.0 • per location 1 Gatekeeper GNU-GK 2.0.2 • per location 1 Radvision Gateway gw-P20 • per location 1 Radvision Data Collaboration System

  9. DFNVC: Service Features • The service • allows ad hoc conferences • offers Dial-In for H.320-systems • supports preparation and initiation of conferences (self dialing) • provides a Global Dialing Scheme • provides test results and descriptions for VC systems • offers hotline and training courses for administrators

  10. DFNVC: Address Specification (I) • Adaption of DFNVC dialplan to E.164 (ITU-Standard for international numbering plan, country prefixes, Germany: 0049) • Allocation of new numbers to gatekeepers and VC devices (according to telephone numbering plan) • Change-over up to April2004 • Migration: devices that are not adapted to the new plan could be reached by their old number • New devices get an E.164 number Consistent addressing for VC and VoIP

  11. DFNVC: Address Specification (II) Global Dialing Scheme (GDS) Jürgen -> Detlef 0049-351-463-35653 Detlef -> Egon 0031-30-2305-367 Egon -> Tyler 001-129-71004 Tyler -> Jürgen 0049-711-633142-41

  12. DFNVC: Degree of utilization • Participants in the production service • contracts signed with ~ 160 organisations and institutes • ongoing negotiations with ~ 100 further organisations • nearly 50% with own gatekeeper • nearly complete VC connectivity • cost recovery is achieved

  13. DFNVC: Further Plans • Examination of system security and service quality • Integration of new functions (e.g. streaming, VoIP-structure, SIP based signalisation) • Service administration via LDAP (H.350) • Reservation / Meeting management system, e.g. • reservation system for vc rooms • using mail with unified calender format • project definition phase • ...

  14. DFNVC: Summary Links for interested organisations • Introduction into the service • VC portal http://www.vc.dfn.de • Procurement of VC systems and gatekeeper • Consulting via hotline and have a look at http://vcc.urz.tu-dresden.de/vc-systeme/
