Who Was Involved? President Nixon arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee headquarters Nixon had a tape recording system in his offices Recordings implicated the president attempted to cover up the break-in
The Break-in At Watergate • June 17, 1972 • five men arrested inside Democratic National Committee's office • Virgilio González, Bernard Barker, James W. McCord, Jr., Eugenio Martínez, and Frank Sturgis • Convicted for conspiracy, burglary, and violation of federal wiretapping laws • Convicted on January 30, 1973 • tied to the 1972 Committee to Re-elect the President
"Saturday Night Massacre" • Special prosecutor Archibald Cox • Cox's refusal to drop his subpoena from the tapes • December 7, a 18½ minute portion of one tape was found to have been erased • Rose Mary Woods, said she had accidentally erased the tape by pushing the wrong foot pedal • Later forensic analysis determined that the tape had been erased in several segments — at least five • perhaps as many as nine
