  3. HOW DOES IT HAPPEN? Unintentionally Intentionally

  4. INTENTIONALLY! • Borrowing from someone else • Downloading (all or part) from the Internet + copy & paste • Copying from a book or other source • Buying!

  5. Letting your mother/father/sibling/ friend/boyfriend/girlfriend/ grandparent/cat do your work for you or help you too much

  6. REPERCUSSIONS • Teachers lose faith in their students, become wary and suspicious so… • They limit choices for topics to avoid opportunities for plagiarism and … • They go over every essay/report much more thoroughly which … • Takes much more marking time which … • Leaves less time to spend planning good lessons and helping students. EVERYBODY LOSES

  7. RESULTS OF PLAGIARISM AT JOHN F. ROSS C.V.I. • If plagiarism is found, a 3 step graduated system of consequences will be applied. • Penalties will increase in severity and eventually can result in a mark of zero, suspension and/or loss of credit. • How to avoid plagiarism is taught in classes: therefore, students cannot claim that their plagiarism was unintentional.

PENALTIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF GUELPH • Requirement to submit a new piece of work or partial or total loss of marks for an assignment or a course • An official warning that the next offence will be punished by suspension or expulsion from the university • Rescinding of university-funded scholarships or bursaries

  9. Suspension from the university for one or two years • A recommendation for expulsion from the university • A recommendation to revoke or rescind a degree

  10. HOW CAN I USE MY RESEARCH???? • Take point form notes • Copy intended quotes exactly and use “ ” • Summarize • Use your own words • Highlight important facts and ideas • Add your own thoughts even while note-taking • Use graphic organizers

  11. WHEN WRITING THE FINAL PRODUCT • Use your own words • Summarize • Paraphrase and cite (Smith 479) • Quote from the source and cite: ie. (Jones 32) • Give credit to your sources for all ideas, wordings, quotes

As steam-driven companies became more visible in the eastern part, they changed farm hands into factory workers… WHAT IF I CHANGE A FEW WORDS? As new, larger, steam-powered factories became a feature of the American landscape in the east, they transformed farm hands intoindustrial laborers…

  13. THAT’S PLAGIARISM!Why? • Because I have just changed the odd word • Because there are no quotation marks for the parts that are word- for-word • Because there is no credit for the original writer, or page reference (a citation)

(Williams 1) YES !!! IS THIS ACCEPTABLE?

  15. HOW DO I CITE A WEBSITE? Problem: • There might not be an author given • There’s no page number Solution: Use the first 2 or 3 words of the title of the page or the file name (the end of the URL) These will direct your teacher to the citation on your bibliography. Example: (Welcome to Canada’s…) or (Climate.html)

  16. List ALL the sources you consulted on your References page (APA style) or Works Consulted (MLA style) …and finally…
