  2. Crime (Victim) • Murder of Paul Jennings (Victim) • Found dead at the age of 29 • Lived alone without a girlfriend or many friends • First on Scene- Kevin Johnston (Suspect)

  3. Crime (Location) • Paul Jennings was found dead in his own car in the local gun shop parking lot • Found by Kevin Johnston, a poor and mental man who lived with his mom on the other side of the parking lot

  4. Crime (Time of Occurance) • Crime committed on December 23, 2009 at approximately 9:15 pm • Victim was found dead on December 24, 2009 at approximately 5:55 am

  5. Crime (Details) • Car was not at all damaged • Victim was found dead in driver’s seat • The victim was not murdered too violently. No blood was left behind

  6. Detective/Officer Clyde Chase • Professionally trained police officer and detective • Lives in the local area and works part-time at this gun shop on the weekends • Very intelligent, sneaky, successful at uncovering crimes, and somewhat heartless • He was very good friends with the victim. They met at the gun store years ago and have been friends ever since. • Is part of the volunteer fire department and was the first responder at Vinny’s house fire.

  7. Evidence • The main piece of evidence that was left behind was a heavy-duty chain link. • The victim had a dark red mark imprinted around the front half of his neck. • There was no fingerprints or blood left at the crime scene.

  8. Suspect Kevin Johnston Motive -He was jealous of the victim’s rich lifestyle. Opportunity -He would always ride his bike around the parking lot at night.

  9. Clues • He was unstable and had serious mental issues. • Heonce asked Jennings to help him fix his broken bike chain on his bike but he was rude and refused. • He reported the murder to the police at 6:00 am on December 24th.

  10. Suspect Mark O’Neil Motive -He is Jennings’ girlfriend’s jealous ex-boyfriend. She left him for Jennings. Opportunity -He got off work at 5:00 pm on December 23rd.

  11. Clues • Mark and Jennings have been enemies since high school. • He frequently texts his ex-girlfriend and won’t leave her alone. • He never moved to another girl after his ex-girlfriend broke up with him two years before the murder.

  12. Suspect Vinny Jackson Motive -Vinny’s house burnt down while he was on Christmas vacation the year before. There was a heavy-duty chain that was blocking the entry to the driveway for firetrucks during the fire. Jennings was his neighbor up until the fire, and they hated each other since high school.

  13. Opportunity/Clues • Opportunity- He quit his job a week before the day of the murder Clues • Vinny never trusted the victim and he never confronted Jennings about his house being “set on fire.” • Vinny was best friends with Mark and he lived with him right after the fire, until he found a new house. • He was a mechanic and knew how to unlock car doors successfully.

  14. Summary • Paul Jennings had three enemies right up until the time of his death, some more serious than others. • Kevin Johnson told the detective about his hatred for Paul and explained the story about his bike “chain” issue. Mark O’Neil hated Jennings for more than one reason and could have killed Jennings for retaliation. Vinny Jackson was viewed as being guilty because of his close relationship with Mark. Vinny’s burning house was blocked by a chain and a chain link was the only major evidence left in Jennings’ car.

  15. Denouement • Vinny Jackson: Guilty • How? He waited in the gun store parking lot two days before Christmas because he knew that the victim would be in the gun store around Christmas. Jennings was obsessed with guns and was crazy enough to go there even around Christmas. Once the victim went into the store on the late rainy night of the 23rd, he broke into his locked car and waited for him to return behind the driver’s seat. He wore gloves and held the heavy-duty chain from his driveway, waiting to strangle Jennings to death.

  16. Lingering Clues and Story • Vinny disappeared on the night of December 23rd. He was last seen on that day in the early morning. Mark claimed to know nothing about his disappearance. Clyde easily pinned the blame on Vinny because of the evidence left behind, but could not find him anywhere for years to come. Clyde Chase and Paul Jennings were guilty for burning down Vinny’s house together, and Vinny finally got his revenge a year after his house was set on fire.
