  1. St. James United Church What is this “Future Directions” thing that Glenn has been talking about anyway?

  2. Why are we planning for the future in this way? “The purpose of the Joint Needs Assessment Committee (JNAC) is to consider and review the ministry and mission of your pastoral charge and your relationship with the community you serve. The JNAC then considers how these affect the ministry personnel needs of your pastoral charge.” (United Church, 2007)

  3. A JNAC is the first step of the mandatory process of the United Church for “calling” new ministry staff to serve congregations in open ended positions.

  4. The Joint in Joint Needs Assessment Presbytery assigns two representatives to meet with our committee. This is done so that the nuts and bolts of the process are completed. Presbytery doesn’t have volunteers to assign to us, so we are proceed with a Needs Assessment Process (NAC), which we are calling a “Future Directions” discussion .

  5. What will this involve? • There will be an open and participatory process of information gathering and analysis. • The Committee will write a report that is presented to the congregation.

  6. What will this involve? • The report must contain six sections: • Description of community in which the congregation is located. • Description of the congregation, its mission and its relationship to surrounding communities. • Resources of the congregation – financial, facilities, volunteers, staffing levels. • Recommend what sort of ministry St James wants to ??? and a description of the minister’s position. • Skills needed for the position. • Terms of employment for the position.

  7. How can you contribute? • Start thinking about these questions: • What does St. James mean to me? • What does it mean to my family? • What’s the place of St. James in our community? • What/where is St. James’s community? • Are we ministering effectively to that community? • Are we ministering effectively to the congregation?

  8. Who sits on the Needs Assessment Committee? Phil Brown Wayne Cochrane Gordon Smith Ashley Davis Arnold Horne Rena Mae MacDonald Jeff Moors Shauna MacDonald Kevin McTaggart Shirley O’Sullivan Graham Skerrett Sue Skerrett
