  1. GE Update • Craig McConnell • Liberal Studies, 2011-12 GE Committee Chair • David Bowman • Geological Sciences, 2011-12 GE Committee Chair

  2. Recent Accomplishments • New GE Learning Objectives adopted in 2009 and revised in June 2011 • GE Categories realigned to match system-wide A-E pattern • Preliminary GE Assessment Plan drafted • GE Assessment was requested in previous WASC accreditation • In absence of a more appropriate faculty body, GE Committee was tasked with GE Assessment • 2010-11 Committee drafted a multi-year plan to assess Learning Outcomes for all GE Categories

  3. Principles of GE Assessment • Assessment is not used to evaluate individual faculty members; data are reported only in aggregate form • Assessment is not used to evaluate individual courses, or to recertify courses, or to add or remove courses from GE categories • Assessment is not designed to justify our programs to external audiences; it is for internal use and program improvement • Assessment is not used to compare different GE learning areas against one another. • For GE purposes, it is not appropriate to assess student learning on anything other than the articulated learning goals for the GE sections.

  4. Proposed GE Assessment Plan

  5. Pilot in S11 • Proposed GE Assessment Plan

  6. Pilot in S11 Planned S12 • Proposed GE Assessment Plan

  7. Major Increase in GE Committee Workload • Imposes steep learning curve on new members • Committee must still review new course proposals • New Courses only reviewed in Fall, with assessment and recertification in the Spring • Proposals: • Ideally, there should be separate GE Curriculum & Assessment Committees • If this is not an option, then • 1) GE Committee terms should be lengthened to 3 years • 2) GE Committee should receive 1 course release/year • 3) GE Chair should receive an additional release (1 course/semester) • Proposed GE Assessment Plan

  8. Other Recommendations • Closer collaboration with FDC to provide New Course Proposal training and curricular design workshops • Need to create a centralized GE website for students & faculty • Create an online new course proposal process • Coordinate with Writing Board and WASC Writing Task Force to review GE Writing Requirement
