  2. What is Sex-ting? • Sexting is a term coined by the media that generally refers to sending, receiving, or forwarding sexually suggestive nude or nearly nude photos or videos and sexually suggestive messages through text message or email.

  10. Across The Nation • Three teenage girls who allegedly sent nude or semi-nude cell phone pictures of themselves, and three male classmates in a western Pennsylvania high school who received them, have been charged with child pornography.

Across The Nation • The Anthony Weiner sexting scandal, also dubbed Weinergate, began when Democratic U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner used the social website Twitter to send a link to a sexually suggestive pictureto a 21-year-old Washington woman. After several days of denying media reports that he had posted the image, he admitted to having sent a link to the photo, and also other sexually explicit photos and messages to women both before and during his marriage. He denied ever having met, or having had a physical relationship with any of the women. On June 16, 2011, Weiner announced his intention to resign from Congress.

  12. Across The Nation • An18-year-old sent a naked photo of his 16-year-old girlfriend, a photo she had taken and sent him, to dozens of her friends and family after an argument. He was sentenced to five years probation and required by Florida law to register as a sex offender.

Kentucky State Law • Possession of images of sexual performance by juveniles is illegaleven if the juveniles in the pictures photographed themselves and sent them out via email or text messaging This is Possession of Matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor KRS 531.335 (Class D felony). • Students who send out photos of themselves engaging in a sexual performance will also be prosecuted for a felony: Distribution of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor KRS 531.340 (Class D felony). JCPS and LMPD goes after anyone found sexting on school property.

Five things to think about before pressing “send” • Don’t assume that anything that you send or post will remain private • There is no changing your mind in cyberspace – anything you send or post will never truly go away • Don’t give in to pressure to do something that makes you uncomfortable, even in cyberspace • Consider the recipient’s reaction and now its theirs • Nothing is truly anonymous
