2003 November NSF Panel Review of Jicamarca

maintenance challenges
Maintenance Challenges
  • Lots of electronics
  • Lots of antenna connections (corrosion)
  • Aging vehicles
  • But, there are really no single-point failure modes (baring some cataclysmic event) that would cause an extended down time: Multiple systems with multiple transmitters, receivers, computers, but final transmitter tubes now run about $80,000

budget challenges
Budget Challenges
  • Additional operational costs for new instruments
    • JULIA – cost was not previously included in the main budget
    • SOUSY – fuel expected to be $8K/yr for 500 hours of operation
    • Bistatic – Equipment funded separately; routine operational costs
    • Operating with 4 big transmitters – increases peak demand billing
  • Replacement of aging vehicles
    • Need a new one approximately every 2 years
  • Replacement of any failure of transmitter tubes
    • $15K for drivers (expected lifetime is 15K hours: 2 at 13K hr, 1 at 3K hr)
    • $80K for finals (expected lifetime is 15K hours: 2 at 13K hr, 1 at 3K hr)
    • $40K for SOUSY finals
