  3. What is encouraging their development? • Technology • 3-D Printing • Laser cutters • Computer resources • Availability of tools that small companies cannot afford • Woodworking • Routers • Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) Machines • Metal Working Equipment • Fabric equipment

  4. What is the value? • Startups can afford to develop ideas • Collaboration among entrepreneurs breeds innovation • Cost of failure is reduced • Great educational tool • Schools • Libraries • Community sponsors

Sound business practices must be applied • If sound business practices are not applied these places may only become hobby endeavors or educational options • To generate business growth • Production must start out with correct pricing • Can you make a profit? • Is there a market? • Are there resources? • Plan for larger scale production • Plan for cash needs • Don’t expect to be treated differently because you are a “Maker”

  6. Innovation • Technology • Can be a job shop (low quantity product runs) • Can design for specific customer needs • New Product Examples • 3-D printed Candy • NASA has given a grant for 3-D printed food • Robotics • Lighting
