What myasthenia gravis symptoms can I learn to self-manage By Kim Anderson
Tips to help with muscle weakness, shortness of breath, and tiredness • Exercise carefully: Your MG symptoms can make it hard to get exercise, but it’s important to stay active to keep up your muscle and lung strength. If you’re not exercising regularly, start slowly. Try using an exercise bike that has a seat with a backrest, and pedals that are out in front of the bike (called a recumbent exercise bike). Yoga and walking are also good low-impact activities. Talk to your doctor or general practitioner (GP) before you start exercising. • Save your energy: Everyday activities can make you tired, but these ideas can help: • o Get a handicap car sticker, license plate, or placard so you can park closer to buildings • o Sit down when you can: For example, use a scooter or wheelchair at the supermarket or mall • o Pace your activities. Slowing down can help, as well as saving more difficult tasks for when you’re feeling strongest
Tips to help with eating and swallowing • Plan your mealtimes: Try to eat during the times of day when you feel the strongest. If you have the most energy in the morning, eat your biggest meal then. You could also try eating five to six smaller meals throughout the day, instead. • Eat softer foods: Softer foods, like mashed potatoes or yogurt, don’t need much chewing. If you’re eating dry food, add liquid to soften it. • Cut up your food: Cut your food into small pieces, so it’s easier to swallow.
Tips for physical and emotional health • Track how you’re feeling: Writing down your MG symptoms can help you – and your doctor – see how your treatment is working. What should you write? Try tracking the time of day where you feel the best. If you’re having symptoms, track when they happened, how long they lasted, and what might have triggered them. You can also track symptoms using a myMG app on your smartphone or mobile device. We’ve put a link to the myMG app as the first entry in our list of sources. • Get emotional support: Staying positive is important. Connecting with others in a support group or seeing a therapist can help.
