  1. Anticipated Handovers Joachim Hillebrand DoCoMo Communications Laboratories Europe GmbH Munich, Germany February12, 2003

  2. Anticipated Handovers • Slow QoS establishment causes handover delays • „Pre-reservation“ of resources prior to handover • MN stays connected to the old AR until resource reservation to the new AR has been completed • Resource reservation for the new path is initiated by QoS signalling over old path • QoS guarantees during handover can be significantly improved, especially for vertical handovers and inter-domain handovers • Anticipated handovers can even be initiated when the new AR is out of reach and the new AR is known due to some other algorithm (e.g. movement prediction)

  3. Reservation –data path E2E QoS signalling Anticipated HO signalling for new domain New reservation – Data path Access NW B Anticipated Handover – Interdomain Case Access NW A Internet CorrespondentHost MN

  4. Anticipated Handovers New AR might not be accessible yet (e.g. only layer 2) It might be preferable to ask first, if handover is possible at all (admission control, available resources) If reservation fails, MN can stay connected over the old link (without disruptions) Anticipated Handover can be applied for intra- and inter-domain cases Because of expected high time delays for inter-domain connections, the support of Anticipated Handover is very important

  5. Anticipated Handovers in NSIS - Discussion • Anticipated Handover is a significant requirement for future interconnected heterogeneous IP-based mobile networks • QoS signalling for Anticipated HO is important for seamless mobility • Similar QoS signalling method as CARD, Context Transfer (for mobility signalling) • QoS signalling protocols should be done in NSIS • Concept of NSIS Initiator, NSIS Responder, NSIS Forwarder? • How can this be supported in NSIS?
