  1. Extending DNS in combination with IP multicast to support ITS geo(broad)casting servicesG. Karagiannis (with input from Tiago Fioreze and Geert Heijenk)

  2. Geo(broad)cast • Geo(broad)cast is a location-aware service that enables messages to be sent to a set of nodes within specific areas defined by latitude and longitude coordinates • Requirements: • IP addresses of entities must be associated with geographical coordinates: • permanent (Road Side Units (RSU)) • IP multicast to disseminate information to the set of nodes within specific areas defined by latitude and longitude coordinates.

  3. Problem and Possible IETF work • How to provide geo(broad)casting in the Internet: • where the destination area is specified by the source (application) • where destination areas are not predefined • operating in a scalable way? • DNS LOC records RFC1876: • used to record geographical information and IP address for an RSU, but forwarding DNS lookups can only be done by using the Internet RSU hostname to find IP address • Possible IETF work: • Extend DNS to do lookups using predefined geographical coordinates of a road to find IP address • Specify how IP multicast can be used to disseminate information to the set of nodes within specific areas defined by geographical coordinates (combine with ETSI ITS geocast)
