  1. T175 Networked Living: Exploring Information and Communication Technologies First Meeting

  2. Structure of the course • The course is divided into four blocks. Block 1 is half the length of the later blocks. T175 Networked Living

  3. Structure of the course • Block 1 Living in a networked world • provides an introduction to ICT systems and to the course • It introduces some of the ICT concepts and contexts which you will study in more depth as you progress through the course • It also begins to develop your learning, communication and numeric skills • This block has three main aims: • to explore how ICTs impact upon our everyday lives; • to introduce you to ICT systems and some of the ways in which we study them; • to get you started on the development of your key skills (a development which will continue throughout the course). T175 Networked Living

  4. Structure of the course • Block 2 Communication and identity • looks at how networks can connect people, information and devices • It also considers the role of identity in communication – identities of devices and of people • Most of this block is delivered online so that you can develop skills in navigating, searching and learning from the World Wide Web. T175 Networked Living

  5. Structure of the course • Block 3 Entertainment and information • considers how ICTs have transformed entertainment and news broadcasting. • It explains some underlying ICT concepts in the context of digital images, film, computer games, news gathering and broadcasting. • As part of this block you will use spreadsheets to create some simple models. T175 Networked Living

  6. Structure of the course • Block 4 Health, transport and government • explores three contexts in which ICTs are becoming increasingly important. • You will learn about the systems and concepts used in these settings: for example, e-government websites, information systems in the health service, communication systems in road networks. • By looking at three different contexts, this block will help you consolidate your knowledge of ICTs. T175 Networked Living

  7. T175 PI Course • Block 1 - Living in a Networked World • ICTs in Everyday Life • Introducing ICT Systems • Technology News • Block 2 - Communication and Identity • People to Information • People to People • Device to Device T175 Networked Living

  8. T175 PI Course Material • Login to the course material • Through website • Through LMS site T175 Networked Living

  10. T175 PI Course Assessment • Continuous assessment (22) • Two Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA1(5)&TMA2(10)) • One quiz (7) • Final Exam(25) • To pass the course: • You have to pass both continuous assessment + final exam T175 Networked Living

  11. T175 P2 Course Assessment Continuous assessment (28) Two Tutor Marked Assignments (TMA1(10) & TMA2(10) ) One quiz (8) Final Exam(25) To pass the course: You have to pass both continuous assessment + final exam T175 Networked Living

  12. Assignment Handling • Technical support team give the students them username and the password of LMS system. • Student download assignment from LMS system and answer in rtf/html format then send it to the LMS system. • Tutor correct assignment with comments and send it back to the student via the LMS system. 13. Block 1 • Living in a networked world • Part 1 • ICTs in everyday life T175 Networked Living

  14. Study Session 1: The network society • 1.1 Data and information: • Data is a representation of information so that it can be conveyed, manipulated or stored. • Information is the meaning that people give to data in particular contexts. • 1.2 What are ICTs? • ICTs are the technologies used in the conveying, manipulation and storage of data by electronic means. T175 Networked Living

  15. Study Session 1: The network society • Activity 1: • Using the explanation of ICTs given, would you say that the technologies used for email communication are ICTs? • 1.3 Technology and society: • The terms information society and network society have been used to analyze the social and economic changes that are taking place in conjunction with technological developments. T175 Networked Living

  16. Study Session 1: The network society • Activity 2: • Ian Pearson makes a prediction about everyday life in 2010, after reading the article: • How accurately do you think it predicts the future? • Have any of his predictions come true yet? T175 Networked Living

  17. Ian Pearson Future prediction • We will quickly move toward the information economy , Computer will become intelligent and thinking machine it will replace the worker with free charge. What will be left are those areas who need a human touch. • Worker equipment will have access to the Internet through the satellite. • Network base life will affect the home too, I think we may face a day with a bet robot. T175 Networked Living

  18. Study Session 2: Your networked life • Activity 3: • Think about a typical day and list the different ways in which you communicate, or are communicated with, using technology. What communication devices (pieces of equipment) or networked systems can you think of that are involved? T175 Networked Living

  19. Study Session 2: Your networked life Communication Using Technology Devices or Systems Used Computer, telephone/cable line, internet Electronic notice board to display information. Some sort of networked information system in the station --all the noticeboards are updated at the same time. • Sending an email from home • Reading train information • at a station T175 Networked Living

  20. Study Session 2: Your networked life Communication Using Technology Devices or Systems Used Bar code on swipe card, card reader at the door. Network to central computer to verify that I am authorized to enter. My computer Network linking my computer to my colleague’s computer. • Getting into my office building • Emailing a colleague from my work computer T175 Networked Living

  21. Study Session 2: Your networked life Communication Using Technology Devices or Systems Used Handset and telephone line to local exchange. Network of telephone exchanges. Mobile phone. Wireless connection into mobilephone network. • Making a phone call from a landline telephone • Sending a text message on my mobile phone T175 Networked Living

  22. Study Session 2: Your networked life Communication Using Technology Devices or Systems Used Handset and telephone line to local exchange. Network of telephone exchanges. Personal computer, telephone line and modem or other network connection. The internet that links my computer to other players’ computers. • Playing a computer game with others online from my home computer. • Sending a text message on my mobile phone T175 Networked Living

  23. Study Session 2: Your networked life Communication Using Technology Devices or Systems Used Bank card and PIN, ATM machine. Bank network linking ATMs and central computers holding customer data. TV set, remote control, aerialor cable link to receive signals from the TV broadcasters. Broadcasting network that transmits signals from TV station. • Finding out my bank balance from an ATM machine • Watching TV T175 Networked Living

  24. Study Session 2: Your networked life • 2.1 ICT systems in everyday life: • The communication devices do not operate in isolation but need to be part of an information and communication. • Some examples of situations where ICTs are having an impact on our everyday lives: • 2.1.1 Finance: • Financial services have undergone huge changes in recent years as a result of the development of ICT systems. T175 Networked Living

  25. Study Session 2: Your networked life • 2.1.1 Finance Continue: • Debit or credit card the shop • Shopping online • ATMs • Banking services via the internet • Travel (e-ticket) • Computer-based business (eBay, Amazon) • Protection against fraud • . T175 Networked Living

  26. Study Session 2: Your networked life • 2.1.2 The internet: • Enormous impact on all areas of life. • Online information resources. • Communicate with others (emails). • Online communities. • Publications. • Societies protection against crimes. T175 Networked Living

  27. Study Session 2: Your networked life • 2.1.3 Entertainment: • Digital broadcasting. • Digital cameras, printers and scanners. • Computer gaming. • Music & Movies production and distribution. • 2.1.4 Public services: • Transportation. • E-government. • Ex:you can renew or apply for a passport, • book a driving test, claim benefits, T175 Networked Living

  28. Study Session 2: Your networked life • 2.2 ICTs and you: • Think a bit about your own experiences and focus on your own views. • Activity 4: • Think of ways in which your own life has changed because of ICTs. This could be at work, in your education, in your leisure-time activities, or in your own home. Are all of these changes things that you have welcomed? T175 Networked Living

  29. Study Session 2: Your networked life • 2.3 ICT systems at home: • Smart home is by integrating the control of home systems (entertainment, lighting, security, heating). • The idea of a smart home is to integrate the control of these systems. So, for example, if you are away from home and want to make sure the house is warm for when you get back, you could call the house and switch the central heating on. T175 Networked Living
