Bullying Definition The act of being habitually cruel or overbearing, especially to smaller or weaker people • Bullies come in all shapes, sizes, genders, and ages.  Ninety-year old grannies can be bullies! • Bullies intentionally, deliberately and persistently use intimidation and manipulation to get their way  • Bullies are strategically uncooperative and unpleasant

  5. Cyber Bullying Definition: • The use of email, instant messaging, chat rooms, pagers, cell phones, or other forms of information technology to deliberately harass, threaten, or intimidate another person

  6. Why Do People Bully? 1. They do it to get attention 2. They do it to make other people afraid of them 3. They do it because they might be jealous of the person they are bullying 4. They may be being bullied themselves 5. They do it to make themselves feel good

  7. What does a Bully look like? 1.They have a positive view of their behavior and violence in general 2. They usually have a stronger physical build than their victims 3. They are usually hot tempered and easily provoked 4. They enjoy the feeling of power and control 5. They lack compassion and empathy for their victims 6. They enjoy causing pain 7. They have high self-esteem

  8. Bullying in Video Games • What does it look like?

  9. Scenario 1 • You’re playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. You have a head set on and are talking to the members of your team. People you don’t even know tell you that you are a bad player, curse at you and tell you leave the lobby… Is this bullying?

  10. Scenario 2 • You’re playing Madden online. You are beating the person that you are playing against. You tell him that he really should just stop playing because he has no chance. Once the game is over you tell him that it was a good game and that you should play again sometime… Is this bullying?

  11. Anti-Bullying Posters • Now using what you have learned you are going to be broken into groups (made by ME). You will be creating an anti-bullying poster on a specific type of cyber bullying. Use an example that relates to your classmates, BE CREATIVE! • You must include: • Creative Graphic • Slogan • 2 ways to stop that type of bullying

Did you try to intervene?

  14. Cyber Bullying Definition: • The use of email, instant messaging, chat rooms, pagers, cell phones, or other forms of information technology to deliberately harass, threaten, or intimidate another person

Types of Cyber Bullying • Flaming • Online fights using electronic messages with angry and vulgar language • Denigration • Sending or posting cruel gossip or rumors about a person to damage his or her reputation or friendships • Impersonation • Pretendingto be someone else and sending or posting material online that makes that person look bad, gets that person in trouble, or damages that person’s reputation or friendships

Types of Cyber Bullying • Outing and Trickery • Outing refers to sharing someone’s secret or embarrassing information online, this can be done by tricking the victim • Trickery refers to tricking someone into revealing personal information about themselves and the sharing that information with others • Exclusion • Intentionally excluding a person from an online group • Cyber Stalking • Engaging in repeated online activities that make another person afraid for his or her safety • Happy Slapping • Assaulting a sometimes unsuspecting victim while an accomplice records the assault with a camera phone or a Smartphone

  17. Drill and Objectives • Objective • We will analyze the characteristics of (6) passive and (4) provocative victims. • We will identify (6) different types of bystanders. • Drill • What does the term cyber bullying mean? • List two types of cyber bullying and give and example for each.

  18. Victims • Most of the time when you discuss the idea of bullying, you think about the person bullying. Have you ever thought about the victim? • There are two main types of victims in bullying situations • Passive Victims • Provocative Victims

  19. Passive Victims 1. They are physically weaker than their peers 2. They are scared of being hurt, have poor physical coordination, and are not athletic 3. They have difficulty making friends 4. They have poor social skills 5. They cry or get upset easily 6. They have difficulty standing up for themselves in peer groups • Represent 80-85% of all bully victims

  20. Provocative Victims 1. They have difficulty concentrating 2. They are restless, hyperactive, impulsive, and create tension 3. They are clumsy, immature, and exhibit irritating habits 4. They are sometimes disliked by adults, including teachers • Represent 15% of all bully victims

  21. Bystanders • Have you let people bully others? • What have you done to try and stop it? • Anything?! • Think about it… • What do different types of bystanders look like?

  22. Types of Bystanders 1. “Henchmen” – They take an active part, but do not start the bullying 2. Supporters – They support the bullying, but do not take an active part 3. Passive Supporters – They like the bullying, but do not display open support 4. Disengaged Onlookers – They watch what happens, but do not take a stand

  23. Types of Bystanders 5. Possible Defenders – They dislike the bullying and think they ought to help, but do not 6. Defenders of the Victim – They dislike the bullying and help, or try to help, the victim • Which one are you?

  24. The Anti-Bully/Proactive Bystander Contract • You will take a few minutes to think on your own about a document that we can make as a class to promote anti-bullying and proactive bystanders. You will then be placed into groups to create the contracts, we will place them on the board and vote for the one we like the best and it will be copied and signed by all of us. • Remember, it only takes one person to stop a bully, there are more than 30 of us in this room. How many victims could we help?
