  1. Arundon Mining Solutions Oy The Green Mining Business Model Concept: By integrating the key principles Safety, Health, Environment, and Community (SHEC) into the planning process, Arundon strives to raise the bar for Sustainable Development (SD) performance within the industry. Although there are many perspectives and definitions of sustainable development; in the context of mining, sustainable development requires us to re-engineer 1st world nations in such a way that its economics become conducive to resource stewardship, while simultaneously elevating the standard of living in developing nations. In addition to the increased demand from developing nations, re-engineering of the 1st world and its energy infrastructure will require a substantial increase in the world inventory of mined commodities. Copper for hybrid cars, PGM’s for fuel cells, Lithium for batteries, rare earths for new technologies, cast lightweight metals, carbon sequestration, tar sands, solar-, tidal wave-, and wind- solutions, the list is endless. The challenges faced in safety, health, environment and sustainable community development often require technical solutions. Perhaps among the most limiting factors to achieving sustainability are the global shortage of skilled, technical labour and the current lack of training and research capacity. 2. Arundon Mining Solutions Oy We believe that under the current political and economic climate, a commitment to "doing things right" is no longer simply an optional, moral imperative, but will clearly add value. A company that provides green mining technology, training and services to smaller operations would be economically viable. A few examples of the value such a company would provide include: Carbon Credits for Extinguishing of Coal Seam Fires or Mining of Burning Coalfields. Coal seam fires generate hundreds of thousands tonnes of CO2 yearly, contributing significantly to global emissions. Extinguishing of coal seam fires or actually mining of burning abandoned workings is technically difficult and there is a significant additional cost for the management of associated SHEC issues. However, as the global economy and international policies shift to address climate change, the potential for carbon offsetting means that a lot can be achieved with the latest, state of the art, extinguishing- and mining techniques. Tax Benefits and Collaboration. According to the World Bank, artisanal and small-scale Mining (ASM) is practiced in over 50 countries, providing livelihoods to over 100 million of the world's poorest people. Such operations often do not have access to the technical expertise required to implement best management practices, resulting in unsafe working conditions and environmental damage. A junior mining technology company would be best positioned to share safety, health, and environmental expertise to artisanal and small-scale miners, as well as non-profit organizations committed to facilitating sustainable development of impoverished communities. By providing these services and technology transfer at cost, such a company could realize tax benefits. Long Term Contracts with Downstream Industries. Downstream industries can be in support of SHEC responsible mining operations by entering into long-term off-take contracts. Economic uncertainties have, in particular, a negative affect on SHEC management. For example postponing of budgeted safety related expenditures are a prime example. Reducing risks creates a, much needed, stable environment to operate in. Responsible companies should market themselves and commodity trading should become more transparent. Ultimately the consumer should have the choice. Arundon Mining Solutions Oy Y-tunnus 2226106-8 Bouke van ‘t Riet, Pr. Eng., M. Eng. 3. Arundon Mining Solutions Oy Price Premiums for Sustainably Produced Commodities. People are prepared to pay a premium for hybrid cars and green electricity. Why not green metals? Employer of Choice. An industry that "does things right" will be more attractive to the most innovative and enthusiastic talent, which in turn will make companies that embrace this viewpoint more competitive. Cost-Effective Technology Transfer. In addition to annual site visits and training, the use of digital conferencing and telecommunications provide other low-cost training and knowledge-transfer solutions. By taking a self-critical look at its operating practices, engaging fully with NGOs, considering seriously the feedback they provide, the new green mining company has an opportunity to emerge with a competitive edge perhaps more difficult to achieve by the majors. With the endorsement of those that have historically criticized the industry, such a company has an opportunity to gain considerable market advantage while obtaining its 'social license' to operate. This business model will help transform the industry whose tarnished public image continues to impede its success unless such a transformation takes place. We intend to develop the Green Mining Business Model Concept further by opening this dialogue with NGO’s, Universities, junior mining companies, research centres, and potential investors.
