  5. The Countryside Empties • The new factories were like magnets. They pulled people from the countryside with the promise of regular work and good wages. • Look at Source B. Listthe five biggest industrial towns in1851by order ofsize.

  6. The Countryside Empties • When factory owners started to build houses for their workers, shops, churches and inns soon followed. • Places that were previously tiny villages grew into large towns and small towns became huge, overcrowded cities.

  7. The Growth of Towns and Cities • Answer questions 1-3 on your hand-outs. • Look at Source A. Imagine you have built a factory that is going to create a town. You must: • Give your company a name • Decide what productyou are going to make • Explain how you’re going to attract workers • Explain all the ‘knock-on’ effects their arrival is going to have • Finally, give your town a name.
