  1. 1st surname 7th surname 5th surname 3th surname 8th surname 2nd surname 4th surname 6th surname The 1st surname of the donor indicates his paternal ancestry DONOR Online Resource 1. Reconstruction of donor pedigree according to the surnames provided in the questionnaire. Traditionally, in the Basque Country, children inherit 2 surnames, the first from the father and the second from the mother. In the questionnaire, we asked for the surnames of the grandparents, allowing us to reconstruct and infer the origin of the great-grandparents (4 generations back). Since Basque surnames are in the Basque language, they are easily identified and allow the Basque ancestry of an individual to be inferred. The autochthonous Basque population sample (BAS) analyzed in this study was selected on the grounds of all 8 of these surnames being in the Basque language and all four grandparents being born in the Basque Country. The Basque diaspora population sample in the Western USA (BD) was selected on the grounds of at least one of these 8 surnames being in the Basque language. Furthermore, if the donor’s first surname is in the Basque language, paternal Basque ancestry can be assured.
