  16. Tentative Lecture schedule: Week of: Subject Text chapter Aug. 22 Mod. Biology; Scientific Method 1 Basic Chemistry 2 Aug. 29 Molecules of Life 3 …... Sept. 16 EXAM I Chapters 1- 4 Dec. 9 Final Exam at 12:30 p.m.

  17. Science begins with questions • Scientific Method • Hypothesis – “an educated guess” about how something works • Must be testable to be useful • Can test by experimentation

  18. What makes a good experiment? • Control (s) • Test group(s) • Results: • Can only disprove the hypothesis – can never “prove” that it is true • Use statistics because responses can differ • Causation vs. correlation • Was your experimental design flawed?

  19. Theory • Is the “best guess” we have at this time • A set of interconnected hypotheses that have withstood repeated experimental testing.

  20. How are all organisms alike? • Made of organized parts • Made of cells • Perform chemical reactions • Obtain energy from their surroundings • Respond to their environment • Mature (change) over time • Reproduce • Have a common evolutionary history

  21. Homeostasis : maintaining a constant internal environment in spite of changes in the external environment.

  22. Cells • Prokaryotic cells lack a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles (bacteria) • Eukaryotic cells contain a nucleus and have organelles

  23. How do organisms differ ? • 3 Domains : Archaea , Eubacteria, Eukarya • Kingdoms: Protista, Plantae, Fungi, Animalia • Phylums, Classes, Orders, Families, Genera, Species • Adaptations • Evolution • Natural Selection
