  2. What is Folk Literature? • Made-up stories handed down from generation to-generation by oral tradition • Oral tradition: stories that were NOT written down. • Types: • Myths • Folk Tales/Tall Tales • Legends • Fables • Fairy Tales

  3. Why do they exist? • A long time ago, people used folk literature in order to: • Explain natural mysteries of the natural world (thunder, why the leaves change colors, why the sky is blue). • Reveal dreams and fears, making them possible/manageable. • Helps explain our place in the universe. • Entertain people

  4. Myths • Contains gods and goddesses of different cultures • Explains: • How the world began • Natural events of the world (lightning, thunder, why the sun rises) • Human relationships • Fears • Cultural values

  5. Folk Tales • Stories of enchantment set in lands faraway • Contains magic of some sort • Normally has a happy ending • Many fairy tales are also folk tales

  6. Legend • Usually based off a real person or event. • Has a mix of both fact and fiction • Features a main character that is able to do extraordinary things

  7. Fable • Short story • Usually has animals as characters • Uses lots of personification • The end has a moral/lesson that the reader should take from it.
