Business Use Cases • Business Context – • SCE obtains weather information from Weather Data Service Providers • If the provider is an external source, a Service Agreement defines the T’s & C’s for the service. • A Weather Station sends Weather Measurements to the SCE back office. • Weather Analytics produces the other Weather Data Products sent to the SCE back office. • Service Invoices and Service Payments are exchanged between SCE and external Weather Data Service Providers.

Business Use Cases Business Use Case Perspectives – Grid Planning Grid Operations Resource Planning Regulatory Compliance Asset Maintenance Customer Service Forecasts for generation, load, demand, energy trading, and potential conditions based on Forecasts and Historical data. Real time situational awareness and monitoring of actual weather phenomena affecting grid operations. Forecasts and Real time Conditions and Advisories used to maximize workforce productivity, effectiveness, and safety. Historical and Real time data used to verify environmental regulatory compliance. Historical data used to assess impact on equipment life and to estimate performance degradation. Also used for maintenance planning. All types usedtoempowercustomers to participate in managing their own energy consumption. Also used for notifications.

Weather Data Requirements • Weather Data Categories • Measured – Any weather data that is the measure of a physical characteristic by an instrument is classified as Measured Weather Data. • Condition – Any weather data that is determined by the evaluation of one or more measured weather data items is classified as a Weather Condition. • Advisory – Any weather notification concerning adverse weather conditions that is issued by an official reporting agency is classified as a Weather Advisory.

  6. Weather Data Requirements • Weather Data Environments • Atmospheric – The atmosphere is the gaseous environment that surrounds the earth. Information about weather activity that occurs in the atmosphere is identified as Atmospheric Weather Data. • Geospheric– The geosphere is the solid environment of the earth. Information about weather activity that occurs in the geosphere is identified as Geospheric Weather Data. • Hydrospheric– The hydrosphere is the water environment of the earth. Information about weather activity that occurs in the hydrosphere is identified as Hydrospheric Weather Data. • Space – The conditions on the sun and in the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere that can influence the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems and endanger human life or health is identified as Space Weather Data.

Weather Data Requirements • Weather Data Time Periods • Historical – Historical weather data includes past actual measurements, conditions, forecasts, and advisories. • Current – Current weather data includes the most recent measurements, conditions, and advisories. • Forecast – Forecast weather data includes the most recent predicted future weather measurements and weather conditions. • Security Requirements • Any weather data used for monitor and control must be obtained from secure channels.

Weather Data Modeling Requirements • Weather Information Modeling Requirements • Model weather information as a product. • Include model elements that account for pricing. • Model weather data types and instances of weather data separately. • Weather Analytics Modeling Requirements • Model business rules an external data provider uses to analyze weather data. • Model business rules the utility uses to define process trigger points.

Weather Data Modeling Requirements • Weather Station Modeling Requirements • Model weather instrumentation location information. • Model weather measurement quality information. • Weather Service Agreement Modeling Requirements • Model terms and conditions. • Model weather information usage by lines of business. • Weather Location Modeling Requirements • Model location data for weather at a single point on the earth’s surface. • Model location data for weather over an area on the surface of the earth. • Model location data for weather throughout a volume of space above or below the surface of the earth.
