  8. Review from last week • Learning to imitate God-WWJD • Living a life of sacrificial love • Speaking a new language (Royal) • Loving people in darkness while hating darkness • Staying awake in a medicated or drowsy world • Shining His light through the gospel

  9. Preview of today’s passage • Sentence 1: v.15-16 “Wise walking” • Sentence 2: v. 17 “Understanding God’s will” • Sentence 3: v. 18-21 “Being filled with the Holy Spirit and revealing His fruit”

  10. “Walking wisely” • 15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil. • Our thoughts: reflecting God’s or the world’s • Our words: edifying or caustic, critical, even cruel • Our behavior: “Actions, yes; attitudes; not so much” Are we redeeming time spent with spouse, family, friends, acquaintances and even strangers?

  11. Table talk: a bit existential • Kitty and I have a friend who has been given 30-60 days to live due to an aggressive, cancerous brain tumor. If that were you, how would it affect your thoughts, words and actions? What changes would you make to “redeem” the time you have left?

  12. Understanding God’s will • 17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.  • What does the Lord want you to be and do? • Displaying foolishness • What has the Lord clearly said in His word?

  13. Filled with alcohol or the Holy Spirit? • 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,  • Taking a drink(allowed, a depressant not a stimulant) • What is dissipation? Wastefulness… • Be (being) filled with the Spirit (unlike salvation, this requires repetition); allow yourself to be filled by faith, a positive command.

  14. Table talk • What teaching have you had on being filled with the Holy Spirit? How does a person continue to be filled with the Spirit? How has God the Holy Spirit revealed Himself in your life, marriage, and ministry?

  15. First result: • 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; • True fellowship prompted by the Holy Spirit • True worship regardless of your singing ability

  16. Second result: • 20 always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; • Always • Giving thanks • For all things • In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ…

  17. Third result: • 21 and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ. • Be subject (question of rank, not IQ or value) • To one another (within the church, etc…) • In the fear of Christ (seeking to please Him to Whom each of us is ultimately accountable)

  18. Wrap up • God’s Secrets for Success in Life-review • Your walk, God’s will, His wonderful Enabler • Next week: Mike Pullen-God’s Blueprint for Marriage (Eph. 5:22-33) • Closing song by Fernando Ortega “Children of the Living God” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6anpAf9EoY

  19. Have a great day!
