  1. Please follow the following instructions! Inference should be the first sentence. DO NOT lift any words from the source! STICK to ONE inference for each sentence. 4. They saw them as savior / source of comfort. In the source it states that ‘For newcomers in a strange country, the hui offered the opportunity of social contact with their own dialect group as well as help adjusting to their new surroundings’. This implies that the coolies who were new to the country welcome the hui because they helped them adapt to the new country.

  5. They saw them as threat to their safety. In the source it states that ‘The alternative was persecution and violence’ and ‘fear of retribution kept the members in line’. This implies that the coolies had no choice but to join the hui and follow their orders because otherwise they would be punished or killed.

  6. They lived in unhealthy conditions. In the source it shows the prisoners-of-war all living in a bunk in cramped conditions where so many of them are housed in the bunk. This implies that the prisoners are prone to diseases because they are living close to together with little ventilation.

  7. They were malnourished. In the source it shows most of the prisoners-of-war skinny such that their ribs can be seen. This implies that the prisoners have not been fed well, so they have become so skinny that they look like skin and bones.

  8. The European POWs are housed together separate from the other races. In the source it shows all the POWs to be Europeans and none is an Asian. This implies that the POWs were put together according to their races so that they are separated from the rest of the races
