  1. Objective of this Presentation + Introductions Overview of referenced ISO/OMG standards and specifications The OSFI Metadata Repository Connection OSFI Business and Technical Reference Models Detail Walkthrough of multi-metadata models involved Wrap-up Agenda

  2. Use Case of metadata repository implementation in progress at OSFI Show how multiple metadata models were defined and used towards the procurement and implementation of a metadata repository Showcase the span of metadata and data management standards that contributed to this effort Objectives of this presentation…

  3. The primary regulator and supervisor of: all banks in Canada, all federally incorporated or registered trust and loan companies, insurance companies, co-operative credit associations, fraternal benefit societies and federally administered pension plans. Its mission is to safeguard policy holders, depositors and pension plan members from undue loss Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI), Canada

  4. Over 25 years of experience and involvement in Metadata/Database Standards and Data Management Canadian Delegate in ISO SQL (WG3) and Metadata Working Groups (WG2) Past Chair of ISO Conceptual Schema WG and Govt. of Canada Treasury Board IT Standards (TBITS SQL) Author of several publications Highly successful DW and metadata based implementations Baba Piprani – Consultant, SICOM, Canada

  5. Over 20 years of Data Management Data Architecture Group manager Overseeing the implementation of the Metadata Repository at OSFI Initiated Enterprise Data Controls that include data standards, data warehouse standards and enterprise control lists (value domains) Actively promote Enterprise Data Architecture with emphasis on data quality and data integrity Ginette Levesque Hansma, OSFI, Canada

  6. Part 1 - Framework Part 2 - Classification Part 3 - Registry metamodel and basic attributes Part 4 - Formulation of data definitions Part 5 - Naming and identification principles Part 6 - Registration Part 1 explains the purpose of each part. Part 3 specifies the metamodel that defines the registry The other parts specify various aspects of the use of the registry The ISO/IEC 11179 Metadata Registries standard consists of 6 parts:

  7. should be registered according to the Registration guidelines (11179-6) will be uniquely identified within the register (11179-5) should be named according to Naming and Identification Principles (11179-5) should be defined by the Formulation of Data Definitions rules (11179-4) may be classified in a Classification Scheme (11179-2) Each Data element in ISO/IEC 11179 Metadata Registries:

  8. Part 1 – Reference Model Part 2 – Core Model Part 3 – Metamodel for Ontology Registration Part 4 – Metamodel for Model Mapping Part 1 describes concepts and architecture to be applied in the development and registration of individual metamodel frameworks in other parts. Part 2 specifies the core model to describe metamodel items Part 3 specifies the metamodel that provides a facility to register administrative information about ontologies Part 4 provides a metamodel for describing differences in format and type of objects and transformation rules to be exchanged or shared The ISO/IEC 19763 Framework for Metamodel Interoperability standard consists of 4 parts:

  9. Common Warehouse Metamodel (CWM) Courtesy OMG

  10. CWM PACKAGES • CWM’s 4 layers describe metamodel packages that address the complete lifecycle of data warehouse applications

  11. CWM Foundation Package Courtesy Doug Mann

  12. CWM Resource Package Courtesy Doug Mann

  13. CWM Analysis Package Courtesy Doug Mann

  14. CWM Management Package Courtesy Doug Mann

  15. CWM allows for metadata interchange amongst Organizations data assets BI and Data Warehouse Knowledge management Services that Encompass life cycle of metadata including Analysis and Modelling Heterogeneous Databases and legacy systems ETL and mappings, transformations That support the managing of structured and unstructured data CWM also supports ER along with UML to enable integration Common Warehouse Metamodel (CWM)

  16. Topic: Multi-Metadata Models Framework OSFI’s Realization of Metadata Repository(Standards based) Standards/Specification:ISO 19763 OMG MOF Topic: OSFI Metadata - Reference metamodels - Reference Frameworks Standards based implementation of:-OSFI Metadata Framework - OSFI Metadata Reference Models In OSFI Metadata Repository - Concepts - Definitions - Designations - Data Elements • Reference Packages • Multi Metadata models • Export/Import XML XMI Topic: Data Standards:ISO 11179 Metadata Registries Topic: IM, IT, DW Standards and Specification: ISO 9075 OMG Common Warehouse Metamodel • - Mappings • DB Schemas, Keys/Indexes • Relational DB Structure • Record Structure • Transformation Tools • Analytical Tools • Data Mining Tools • Warehouse Processes • Warehouse operations

  17. Technical perspective Easy access to accurate and complete inventory of information assets relevant to IT: data models (meta data about models and publishable format), process models (meta data about models and publishable format), data base schemas (meta data about schemas and schema content), data definitions (meta data about definitions and all content), Enterprise Control Lists (ECL) (meta data about ECL, all their content, lexicon, thesaurus ad control vocabulary), data usage and dependencies, business rules (meta data about rules and all content), mappings and transformations (meta data about mappings and transformation and all content), reports and their content (meta data about reports and their layout). Capabilities to perform impact analysis of changes to data/applications Enables re-usability of assets OSFI Metadata Repository - Objectives

  18. Business perspective Easy access to accurate and complete inventory of information assets relevant to the business: data captured, generated and maintained at OSFI (submodel of ISO 11179-3), Business process models (meta data about models and publishable format), data definitions (meta data about definitions and all content), data usage, business rules (meta data about rules and all content), mappings and transformations (meta data about mappings and transformation and all content), data ownership and custodianship, reports and their content (meta data about reports and their layout). Capabilities to perform impact analysis of changes to data Enables efficient Change Management: document of new requirements, review of proposed new information and approval, retirement, etc OSFI Metadata Repository - Objectives

  19. Metadata Repository tool will Store OSFI’s metadata Import/extract metadata from OSFI disparate electronic sources Allows direct input for new requirements Provide “official enterprise” lists and standard values Allow capabilities to manage the metadata Administration (access control, create links/ dependencies, etc.) Validation Reconciliation Impact Analysis Publish metadata Reporting and publishing Queries OSFI Metadata Repository – Overview
