  2. Acids • H+ ions dissolved • Corrosive to metals • Sour taste • pH less than 7 • Bases • OH- ions dissolved • Soapy or slippery • Bitter taste • pH greater than 7

  3. PH scale- • measure if acid, base or neutral • 0 up to 7: acid • 7: neutral • Above 7 to 14: base

  4. A change in one pH unit is 10X as acidic or basic • pH of 2 is 10X more acidic than a pH of 3 • pH of 2 is 100X more acidic than a pH of 4

  5. When pH is too low fish egg development is impaired and increases the amount of dissolved metals which can become toxic. • When pH is too high the water can dissolve organic materials including skin and scales.

  6. Drinking water pH between 6.5 and 8.5 • Most fish tolerate range between 5 to 9
