  2. McCULLOCH V. MARYLAND • Supported the “elastic clause” which is the doctrine of implied powers • Was the national bank constitutional? • ruled that the power of the federal government was supreme over the states • John Marshall ruled that national bank was constitutional because of the elastic clause

  3. Erie Canal • Canal – man made waterway • Erie Canal connected the Great Lakes with the Hudson River in New York • Barges were pulled by mules • Cities along the route grew and prospered • Western farmers could now send goods from the Great Lakes

  4. GIBBONS V. OGDEN • established that states could NOT enact legislation that would interfere with Congressional power over interstate commerce (gave control of interstate commerce to U.S. Congress) • It strengthened the national government • JOHN MARSHALL was chief justice during these important court cases that emphasized the supremacy of federal laws over state laws

  5. Free Enterprise • People are free to buy, sell, and produce goods without government interference • Describes the U.S. economy • Alexander Hamilton promoted this type of economic system.
