  2. Europe begins dumping goods in the United States after the war of 1812 Tariff of 1816 (protective tariff) placed a 25% tax on imported goods but its still not enough Clay proposes his system to strengthen American industry and promote economic growth

Strong banking system that made credit easily available to businesses A Strong protective tariff on imported goods The use of the money from the protective tariff to create roads, canals, and other effective forms of transportation throughout the country (especially in OH, PA, IN, NY) Largely goes unfulfilled because of lingering Republican fiscal conservatism American System

Monroe is a Virginian, good administrator but did not live up to the first 4 presidents intellect Term to describe James Monroe’s Presidency (Became president in 1816 election) His presidency was not all that good problems with tariffs, slavery, internal improvements all dogged him Era of Good Feelings

  5. First economic crisis since George Washington Real estate bubble causes the problems Debtors prisons largely outlawed afterward Panic of 1819

  6. Became an American Ideal Reasons for movement west: • Cheap Land in the West • Tobacco’s destruction of the land • Opening of roads to the west • Destruction of Indian tribes during War of 1812 • Nine new western states added between 1791 and 1819 Westward Expansion

  7. Putting the wants and needs of your geographic region over that of the greater United States Having more loyalty to an area than the country (the South, Virginia, New England, etc.) Sectionalism

Teller Amendment aim to limit slavery in Missouri with an eye to eventual emancipation Defeated in the Senate The compromise created a border 36’30”, north of this would be free, south would be slave states At the time this meant no more slave states Maine was carved from Massachusetts to keep the balance between slave and fee state Missouri Compromise

During this time period Marshall and the Supreme court hear several cases Many of the decisions are aimed at solidifying the courts power over the states, state courts, and inferior federal courts (they had already established their power over the congress under Marbury v. Madison) John Marshall

American possesions Andrew Jackson invades Florida on the pretext of catching runaway slaves and rogue Indians He oversteps his bounds and captures most of Florida Spain is forced to cede Florida to the US, we agree to stay out of Texas Florida Purchase Treaty of 1819 Florida
