  1. Open Access data at VLIZ Experience in retrieving data from EMODnet “Data ingestion, archiving, citation and DOI” June 26, 2014

  2. Overview The data policy The process • Archiving • Documenting • QC & Integration • Publishing • Redistribution EMODnet central portal developments Data ingestion

  3. Data policy at VLIZ www.icsu-wds.org www.iode.org/

  4. WDS Data Policy There will be full and open exchange of data, metadata and products shared within WDS, … All shared data, metadata and products being free of charge or no more than cost of reproduction will be encouraged for research and education. IOC Oceanographic Data Exchange Policy Member States shall provide timely, free and unrestricted access to all data, associated metadata and products generated under the auspices of IOC programmes. Member States are encouraged to provide timely, free and unrestricted access to relevant data and associated metadata from non-IOC programmes …. for non-commercial use by the research and education communities, provided that any products or results of such use shall be published in the open literature without delay or restriction.

  5. Data policy at VLIZ (under development) VLIZ advocates free data exchange and supports the IOC Oceanographic Data Exchange Policy. Wherever possible and relevant, the data from the databases will be made available online through the Internet. Naturally, restrictions may apply, as a result of which we cannot offer unlimited access. This is for example the case for data of which VLIZ is not the primary source: in this case the data exchange policy of the originator of the data will apply.

  6. Validation The process Integration Product generation Redistribution Publishing

  7. Archiving http://mda.vliz.be

  8. Technical: • Storage software • Checksum & size • ‘Material & methods’ • Hierarchy • Units • Formula’s, calculations • … Goal: Correct interpretation &future usability

  9. Metadata discovery: • Responsibles • Access rights • Parameters • Coverage: time, geography, taxonomy, … • Relations to other datasets • Publications Goal: Maximum searchability and retrieval

  10. Integrated Marine Information System IMIS Publishing → Module Datasets: ISO 19115 discovery metadata → Module Literature: ISBD & ASFIS metadata standards

  11. Archiving Marine Data Archive Data Publication MDA Publishing Documenting Integrated Marine Information System + Data citation + DOI + Open Acces ISO 19115 GCMD IMIS

  12. Archived original dataset Integrated datasets publication

  13. In development: DOI & Data Citation data citation & DOI linking will be made possible: Different versions of a dataset each having their own citation (according to Data Cite) & DOI link. DOI is referring to different versions of the data on the MDA. citation Citation and link to other (older) versions of the data DOI link to the MDA- data version

  14. DOI & relation with IMIS & MDA IMIS (citation) MDA- download DOI

  15. Link to Unique Persistent Identifiers (DOI)

  16. EMODnet Central Portal – Use cases • Highlight added value of bringing thematic data together • Use Cases will be used as a roadmap for developing the Portal • Generate functional requirements of portal

  17. EMODnet Central Portal – Use case 1 • Be able to get access to the data via WFS (GetFeature) • Perform queries over WFS • Return output in different formats (list of features per coordinate point, list of points or area, Indexes etc.)

  18. Use Case 1: Query data products simultaneously Retrieve Data from specified coordinates at a given time or for a time interval Physical Parameters (temperature, salinity) Bathymetry Seabed Substrate Marine Region (ICES, Protected Area) Species Abundance

  21. EMODnet– marine data ingestion • Up to now the focus of EMODnet has been distribution of data but some attention now needs to be devoted to ingestion of data. This requires a facility that • provides instructions • ingests the data • checks them • directs them to the appropriate repository for stewardship and dissemination • Facility for data ingestion, available through www.emodnet.eu • Tool to check (QC, standardization, dataformat checks) can be built in parallel EMODnet service tool • Tool needs to redirect data to appropriate repositories for archiving (WDS, NODC) • Tool needs to allow the creation of a datacitation (URI e.a.DOI) and possibly linked data publication • Tool should prepare data for integration into EMODnet thematic products, other integrating datasystems and common data catalogues (GEBCO, OBIS, CDI…) • Uniform way for data citations – ‘Introduction to Digital Citation – Towards an ICES policy on Data Citation’ – currently in prep
