  11. The Development of Feudalism Why did the power of the emperor decline and feudal society develop in
Japan? What social science vocab word does this pyramid look like
to you?

  12. Imperial Rule at Nara What other civilizations have we studied that have moved
their capitals and why?

  13. Imperial Rule at Nara * In 710, the government of
Japan settled at the new city of
Nara. * It was modeled after the
Chinese city of Chang'an. * It became the center of
culture and learning. * Unlike China, Japan didn't
give government jobs based on
merit. Most officials were sons
from noble families.

  14. The Capital Moves If you were surrounded by people who didn't like you
what would you do?

  15. The Capital Moves * Buddhist monks/and priests accumulated great wealth/political power in Nara. * The officials in the Japanese
government felt that Buddhism
had become too powerful in Nara. * In 794 Emperor Kammu moved
the government to a new capital to
Heian-kyo. ("capital of peace and calm.") * Buddhism was outlawed in
Heian-kyo.

  16. Heian-kyo Many years later they renamed it Kyoto

  17. Rise of Fujiwara Since the emperor showed weakness in dealing with Buddhism
can you predict what will happen to him now?

  18. Rise of Fujiwara * In the 800s, the emperor’s
power began to fade. * A powerful family - the Fujiwara came into power,
turning the emperor into a "puppet." * To gain more power they
would have their daughters and
sisters marry into the imperial
family. Fujiwara Clan and Symbol * The two effects that Fujiwara
control had on Japan were: 1) Less imperial power. 2) Less contact with China.

  19. Row of Girls Painting represented the daughter and sisters in the
Fujiwara clan.

  20. The First Shogun The Taira and the Minamoto clans in battle. When Rome fell into chaos after Julius Caesar died what
happened, who took over?

  21. The First Shogun * Two powerful warrior clans,
the Taira and the Minamoto,
wanted to drive the Fujiwara
from power. * Their alliance lasted long
enough to conquer the Fujiwara and
then they turned on each other. * The Minamoto finally
prevailed and named Minamoto
Yoritomo Shogun. * Previously the title was
temporary but Yoritomo kept it
permanently. Yoritomo

  22. A New Social Order If the emperor doesn't have an real power who is
actually the most powerful person in this hierarchy?

  23. A New Social Order * Life under Shogun rule was
lawless and violent. * It was the role of the daimyo
to protect the people living on his
property. Daimyo * In exchange for his
protection the peasants would
work the land for the daimyo. * The daimyo used samurai
(those who serve) to protect his
peasants. Peasant * The samurai would receive
land and money from the daimyo
for their service. Samurai

  24. Important things to remember: * Peasants worked the fields for the daimyo in exchange
for protection. * The daimyo would use armies of samurai to defend the
peasants in exchange for lands and money.

different?
