  1. Week 1 Exercise

  2. Week 1 Exercise • There are two parts to this exercise, I want you to do both in electronic format and e-mail to me by 5pm the day before our next class please. • This will also be the first deposit in your portfolio, so keep a copy.

  3. Week 1 Exercise – Part 1 • Write between half a page and a page explaining what you think your discipline is about. You’ve done enough modules at this stage that you should have some view on what your discipline is about as a whole. Please note, yes I have my own view on what your discipline is about, and other lecturers have their views, but part of your job doing an MSc is to form your own interpretation of your discipline.

  4. Week 1 Exercise – Part 1 • It doesn’t have to be anything profound, just write down what you think this MSc is about. • There is no need to include references if you don’t want, but feel free to.

  5. Week 1 Exercise – Part 1 • Put a title on top of this exercise based on your discipline, so "What is Advanced Software Development?" or "What is Information and Knowledge Management?" or “What is Data Analytics?” or whatever your discipline is.

  6. Week 1 Exercise – Part 2 • Create a MindMap of your discipline, with your discipline name at the centre and at least six main branches (but the more the merrier) and as many sub-branches as you like. This is to tell me what you think the main themes and trends are in your discipline. • This MindMap might simply be a visualisation of the written description you have created in Part 1. • If you don’t know what a MindMap is, google it.

  7. Week 1 Exercise • Remember: I want you to do both in electronic format and e-mail them to me by 5pm the day before our next class please. • Also create a coverpage using this template: • http://www.comp.dit.ie/dgordon/Assignments/Assign_Title.doc

  8. Week 1 Exercise • Finally, don’t forget that your are required to have some kind of project idea by Week 7, I know you might be thinking that you’ll never think of anything, but every student on the MSc courses in the past decade has come up with something, so don’t worry about it. • Use this exercise as an opportunity to review the main themes/subjects in your discipline and see which areas you might enjoy doing a project in.
