Standards and Interoperability in European Technology Platforms

This panel discusses the importance of standards and interoperability in European technology platforms, focusing on various sectors such as nanoelectronics, road transport, and mobile and wireless communications. It also addresses the challenges of electromagnetic interference and the need for a harmonized horizontal approach to standards.

  7. many real life interference examples….. • …. not known to public • Christian Verholt, chairman of CENELEC: ‘The costs of EMC are 2 to 5 % of the total hardware development costs, if carried out properly.’ ‘But if EMC is not taken into account, the costs are much higher, growing above 10 %’ • Appr. 1500 EM interference standards exist now, and more to come, most of them related to sectors • We need a harmonised horizontal, and not a vertical sectoral, approach Standards & Interoperability in ICT European Technology Platforms, ETSI, 23-24 october 2006

  8. Co-existence in complex and dynamic environment Increasingly dense EM environment Standards & Interoperability in ICT European Technology Platforms, ETSI, 23-24 october 2006

  9. Energy and exposure • Often system designed for singular environment. • But: due to plethora of electronic systems everywhere: many unwanted emissions and thus high noise level. • Noise levels 20 dB upto 60 dB compared to >10 years before • Consequences: • Interference issues (German Toll project), thus • Increased levels of transmission power, thus • More interference problems in other systems, etc. • and discussions on human exposure and health etc. Standards & Interoperability in ICT European Technology Platforms, ETSI, 23-24 october 2006

  10. Again: • We need a harmonised horizontal, and not a vertical sectoral, approach: X-platforms Standards & Interoperability in ICT European Technology Platforms, ETSI, 23-24 october 2006

  11. Ad-hoc networks, meshed networks New users add bandwidth! • exponential growth users and bandwidth in EM spectrum Standards & Interoperability in ICT European Technology Platforms, ETSI, 23-24 october 2006

  12. Electromagnetic spectrum: full? Standards & Interoperability in ICT European Technology Platforms, ETSI, 23-24 october 2006

  13. WAPECS: ‘EM spectrum full’ • WAPECS Long Term Policy Goals • Rapid access to spectrum for new technologies • Coherent authorisation scheme • Technology neutrality • Service neutrality For economies of scale, roaming and interoperability: use of spectrum should be harmonised Standards should provide the framework, andonly cover necessary parameters to avoid interference Standards & Interoperability in ICT European Technology Platforms, ETSI, 23-24 october 2006

  14. time WAPECS: ‘EM spectrum full’ • Do we really need white space? • Large part of the spectrum unused! • Only some frequencies are used,at some places • Only sometimes, some frequencies • Conventional spectrum trading, or • Alternative: adaptive and simultaneously use of • frequency and • temporal and • spatial domain? • Broker based (standards, licensed), or sensing based frequency Standards & Interoperability in ICT European Technology Platforms, ETSI, 23-24 october 2006
