Inter-American Juridical Committee Established in 1906 Technical Secretariat: Department of International Law of the Secretariat for Legal Affairs Purposes: • To serve as an advisory body of the OAS on juridical matters. • To promote the progressive development and codification of international law. • To study the possibility of attaining uniformity in the legislation of the countries in the region. Headquarters: Rio de Janeiro Two annual sessions

  3. Inter-American Juridical Committee Receives mandates from: • The General Assembly • The Meeting of Consultation of Ministers of Foreign Affairs • The Councils of the Organization However, it may also act on its own initiative

PROGRAMS, OBJECTIVES Inter-American Juridical Committee CJI Work Agenda • Immunity of States and International Organizations. • Electronic warehouse receipts for agricultural products. • Law applicable to international contracts. • Representative democracy. • Guide for the application of the principle of conventionality. • International consumer protection. • Guide to Principles regarding Public Defenders. • Protection of Cultural Heritage Assets (new mandate from GA 2016) • Corporations, Human Rights, and the Environment (new mandate from GA 2016).

PROGRAMS, OBJECTIVES, AND ACHIEVEMENTS Inter-American Juridical Committee Studies recently completed by the CJI (2012-2016) • Legislative Guidelines on Privacy and Personal Data Protection in the Americas (2015). • Guidelines on the Protection of Stateless Persons (2015). • Guidelines for Managing Migration Issues in Bilateral Relations (2014). • Guide to Principles on Corporate Social Responsibility in the Field of Human Rights and the Environment in the Americas” (2014). • Guidelines for Binational Border or Neighboring District Integration Agreements (2013). • Draft Model Law on Simplified Joint Stock Companies (2012). • Model Legislation on Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict (2012)

PROGRAMS, OBJECTIVES Inter-American Juridical Committee Current mandates assigned to the CAJP relating to matters finalized by the CJI • “Grant due consideration to the CJI report on “Privacy and Personal Data Protection,” and report to the CJI on the outcomes of these considerations.” • “Assess the possibility of the Model Law [on Simplified Joint-Stock Companies] being submitted for consideration by the General Assembly during its next regular session.” • “Give due consideration to the CJI report on ‘Corporate Social Responsibility in the Field of Human Rights and the Environment in the Americas’ and report to the CJI on the outcomes of these considerations.”
