10th Grade World Literature

Ms. Beaty (BAY-TEE)

D215

welcome to our class
Welcome to Our Class!

Happy first day of the fall semester, everyone! Let’s start today off by getting to know each other with a game.

Everyone stand up next to your desk. When it comes to your turn, you must introduce yourself and do a dance move.

Everyone then must repeat the name and dance move for each person who has gone.

For example if Cassandra does the funky monkey, and Joe does the sprinkler, when it comes to Dante’s turn, he introduces his move (the lawn mower), and then EVERYONE repeats Cassandra’s move, Joe’s move, and then Dante’s. This goes on until everyone is done.

let s play one more game
Let’s Play One More Game

Write one statement about you that most people would not know. Are you secretly into Nicholas Sparks books, which your girlfriend thinks is completely girly? Do you have 97 pets? Write something original.

When you’re finished, crumple it up and put it in the bucket. DO NOT put your name on itand don’t write anything you wouldn’t want to share with the class.

game time
Game Time

I choose the first person. Whoever that may be, you come up and draw a piece of paper from the bucket.

Read the statement out loud to the class, and the class will try to guess who wrote it. The first person to guess correctly gets to draw the next paper. If, after three guesses, the person remains unknown, that person gets to come up and draw the next paper.

Hopefully you remember your classmates’ names!!

  • If you are absent, the first thing you want to ask is “Did we do anything yesterday?”
  • All class materials will be posted on the class website weekly – the daily video, any PowerPoints or worksheets, and any other important information.
  • I will also have a “What did I miss?” binder that will be updated daily.
  • Get ready to have “msbeatyoverhills.weebly.com” pounded into your heads!
classroom rules
Classroom Rules
  • Be respectful and courteous of your teachers, your classmates, and yourself.
  • Be prepared each day when you come to class. That means having something to write with, paper, and any work you will need.
  • Be ready to actively participate in class. I will promise not to lecture and make you take notes all the time if you promise to respectfully participate when we do other things.
the bell
The Bell
  • There are times during class when I will give you freedom to talk or interact with your tablemates or sometimes the whole class. We have a lot of freedom in here; that’s just how I roll.
  • However, at those times I will need to call you back to attention for additional instruction or because you’re starting to get way too loud.
  • When that happens, I’ll ring this bell here, and you all will quiet down when you hear it.
  • Let’s try it now…
basic procedures
Basic Procedures
  • When you come in there will be bell work on the board.
    • Get started quickly and quietly
    • Come prepared
  • ALL assignments will be turned into your period’s tray unless I say otherwise
    • The only time you will not is if I ask you to turn an essay/assignment in online
  • ALL assignments must have your NAME, DATE, and CLASS PERIOD on it.
procedures continued
Procedures Continued
  • No name work will be filed in a “no name no credit” folder
    • It is up to YOU to realize you have a zero for a turned in assignment and go to the folder
    • If the work has no name, it cannot be graded
  • If you receive less than a 70 on an assignment, you may make it up for up to a 70 (excluding zeroes for cheating)
    • All make up work must be turned in within ONE WEEK of it being placed in the “Out” box
  • All graded work will be placed in your period’s “Out” box
    • You are responsible for collecting it if you want it back
    • If, for some reason, your grade is lost, you must be able to bring the paper back to me (Which is why I advise looking at the grade, then putting it back).

can i go to the bathroom
Can I go to the bathroom?
  • I allow one person out of the classroom at a time. Not one boy and one girl, not “But he’s been gone foreeeever!!!”, not “But I really have to go!”, and definitely not without a hall pass. However, if no one else is out or if you can wait until someone comes back, then yes, I’ll write a pass (even though it’s right across the hall) and then you can go.
  • If you make this a habit, you will be restricted to three bathroom passes for the six weeks. And your classmates will be quite displeased with you.

can i go to the vending machine
Can I go to the vending machine?
  • I can’t write you a pass to the vending machine. However, I can write you a pass to the bathroom, and if they happen to be selling hot fries and Fanta in the bathroom now… Well, that’s kind of awesome, isn’t it?
  • Even though I know you’re not going to the bathroom, I still only allow one student out of the room at a time. So if you take half an hour to parade around campus looking for your favorite molten-hot BBQ Ruffles, then you’ll probably come back to an angry classmate that really needs to pee.

Back

can i charge my phone
Can I charge my phone?
  • Short answer: Yes.
  • Long answer: There’s an outlet with a power strip underneath the little whiteboard and another on the wall next to my desk. You can use any open outlet to charge your phone.
  • You may not unplug anything. Anything! Not my fridge, not my coffee maker, not my computer, not someone else’s phone, not the printer, nothing. If the outlets are full, sorry.
  • You may not use my computer to charge your phone.

Back

can i eat in here
Can I eat in here?
  • Yes, but for the love of s’mores, don’t shove your trash under your desks or throw it on the floor. Seriously. There are trash cans in the room. Use them.
  • See, what happens is, people stuff chip bags and pudding tops under their desks, and then the OHS mascot, the Fighting Cockroach, finds the trash and is all “Dude, free trash!” and then he calls his friends…
  • …and the next thing you know, there’s a roach on one of you, and you better hope Mrs. Whoever can handle it, because I don’t do roaches.

Back

what are we doing right now
What are we doing right now?
  • Right now? We’re going over frequently asked questions.
  • But in the future when you ask this question, I’ll happily repeat directions for you. And when I say happily, I mean I’ll do it with a lot of sarcasm and make fun of you if you were talking while I was talking and that’s why you didn’t hear. If you just didn’t understand, I’ll do my best to rephrase things to be more clear.

Back

can i draw on the board
Can I draw on the board?
  • If we’re not doing anything else or you finish early, sure. But please don’t use the markers that are in the Smartboard. When you pick those up, it disables my laptop, which is connected to the board even though the screens show different things.

Back

i m done now what
I’m done, now what?
  • Do you have any other work to make up or finish for my class? Do that.
  • Do you have anything you could get ahead on for my class? Do that.
  • Do you have any homework for another class you need to get done? Do that.
  • Do you have to go to the bathroom, get a snack, get water, see the nurse, counselor, or front office? Do that now before we start our next activity.
  • Done with all that? Grab a novel off the shelf and start reading!

Back

can i answer this call
Can I answer this call?
  • I’m not going to stop you if you have an emergencyand need to answer your phone. But it had better be an emergency, and yes, I’m going to ask why.
  • “My boyfriend just wanted to say he loved me” is not an emergency. He can text you that.
  • “It was my mom” is not an emergency. “My dad is in the hospital and my mom was calling” is.

Back

do we have to sit here
Do we have to sit here?
  • Yes. These seats will be your assigned seats until further notice.
  • If you can sit by your friends without talking and everyone gets their work done, awesome! If not, I’ll have to separate people.
  • If you hate the people around you so much that it stops you from learning, then I’ll separate that, too.
  • I’ll also come and mix up the desks every now and then. Making new friends is good for you!

Back

can i go to the nurse
Can I go to the nurse?
  • Yes, if no one else is out of the room. Remember that the nurse has to SIGN YOUR PASS to prove that you were there!

Back

do you have any
Do you have any ___________ ?
  • Probably. If you need something, ask.

how are we graded in here
How are we graded in here?
  • I’ll be handing out the syllabus on Friday, but in the meantime…
    • We use the standard grading scale, 100-93 is an A, and so on.
    • 30% of your grade will be based on Reading and Literature assessment.
    • 35% of your grade will be based on your Writing and Conventions. This is mostly your essay or other paper grades.
    • 25% of your grade will be based on the EOC exam.
    • 5% of your grade will be based on participation.
    • 5% of your grade is based on vocabulary.

Back

what are we going to read this semester
What are we going to read this semester?
  • The Tragedy of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare
  • The Inferno by Dante Alligheri
  • The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka
  • Oedipus the King by Ovid
  • …and other assorted short stories, articles, and poems.

Back

how long until spring break
How long until Spring Break?
  • Spring break starts on April 14 at 7:15 am, or something like that. Anyway, it’s a long way away.

Back

blah blah blah can i transfer out
Blah blahblah, can I transfer out?
  • If you want to transfer out because you hate me or have friends in Mrs. SuchandSuch’s class, then unfortunately the answer is probably no. You can go beg your guidance counselor, but I hope he or she likes you…good luck,
  • If you want to transfer out because you’ve already passed this class, then the answer is probably yes. Go see the counselors at some point and they’ll get you straightened out.

how can i get in touch with you
How can I get in touch with you?
  • You can email me at kbeaty@harnett.k12.nc.us. If it’s not urgent, this is a very reliable way to get in touch with me, but I don’t always check it outside of school.
  • For urgent emails, you can use beatykayla@gmail.com. This goes to my phone so I’ll get it very quickly.
