  1. Warmup Answers!! 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

  2. One Grain of Rice Understanding Exponential Functions

  3. Question #1 Estimate how many grains of rice you think Rani will have at the end of 30 day? Answers may vary Over a billion grains of rice.

  4. Question #2

  5. Question #3 If the story continued and you know how many grains of Rani receives on Day 30, how can you determine how many grains of rice she would receive on Day 31? Multiply 2 by the # of grains of rice for day 30 to find the amount for day 31

  6. Question #4 • How can you determine how many grains of rice she would receive on Day 35? • Multiply the number of grains of rice she receives on day 34 by 2.

  7. Question # 5 How can you determine how many grains of rice she would receive on Day 40? Multiply the number of grains of rice for day 39 by 2.

  8. Question #6 If you know how many grains of rice she receives on a certain day, how can you determine how many grains of rice she will receive 2 days later… 10 days later?

  9. Question#6.after the 2nd day Multiply the current amount of rice for that particular day by 2 to get the next day.… and then multiply the new amount of rice by 2 to get the 2nd day. I would multiply the current amount rice by 2 twice to get the second day. Example: Amount of rice for 2 days later = Current amount *2*2

  10. Question 6 Continued… for 10 days Multiply the current amount of rice for that particular day by two to get the next day….. I would repeat the process 9 more times to get 10 days later. I would multiply the current amount rice by 2 ten times to get the amount 10 days later. Example: Amount of rice for 10 days later = Current amount *2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2*2

  11. Question #7 • Write a sentence that describes how many grains of rice Rani receives each day. • Number grains she receives each day is found by multiplying the number of grains she receives on the previous day by 2.

  12. Question # 8-9 • 8. What is the rate of change? The rate of change is 2. this number represents a common ratio. • 9. Write a Now-Next Rule • Next =Now*2 • Amount of Rice (for Next Day) = Current amount *2

  13. Question 10 • The 2 shows that the amount of rice is doubling each day.

  14. Question 11 • Write a sentence that describes the total number of grains of rice Ranireceives through a certain number of days. • The amount of rice Ranirecieves is 2 multiplied by itself based on the number of days given.

  15. #12 • I think you could multiply 2 by itself base on the number of days to get the rice total for a particular amount of days. • Example:

  16. Explain the difference? • MY Table • Actual Table for the problem

  17. #12 Modifications: Start with 1 grain of rice and then start multiplying two to itself one less time based on the number of days. Ex. For day 3 instead of doing 2*2*2 =8, I would do 2*2=4…

  18. Question # 13

  19. Pay it Forward, Again Number of Deeds Stage of Process

  20. #5-6 • 5. How is the pattern change shown in the plot of the date. The number increases at a rapid rate creating a curved graph. • 6. How many stages of the Pay It Forward process will be needed before a total of at least 20,000 good deeds will be done? 10 stages

  21. Question #3-4 • 3. How does the number of deeds grow at each stage? • They grow exponentially • 4. The common ratio is 3

  22. #7-8 • 7. Next= Now*3 • 8. Next= Now*2 • 9. Next = Now*4
