Bell Ringer • Open your notebook and write down your response to the following question. • What is the difference between weather and climate? Or do they mean the same thing?
4.1 The Role of Climate
Weather vs. Climate Weather Day-to-day condition of earth’s atmosphere at a particular time and place Climate average conditions year-after-year of temperature and precipitation in a region
Examples Weather clear and sunny on Monday but cloudy with a chance of rain on Tuesday Climate seasonal changes that are affected by many factors
Factors affecting climate • Greenhouse effect • Latitude • Heat transport in biosphere
1. Greenhouse Effect • Heat is trapped by an insulating layer in the biosphere • Earth’s temperature range • maintained by CO2, methane, water vapor, and other gases trapped by heat energy
2. Effect of Latitude on climate • Earth is tilted • Solar radiation strikes the surface at different places causing uneven heat distribution • Creates 3 main climate zones: • Polar • Temperate • Tropical
3 main climate zones Polar north & south poles, cold areas Tropical near the equator, warm area Temperate between polar & tropical zones, ranges from hot to cold depending on season
3. Heat Transport in the Biosphere • Unequal heating of earth’s surface causes wind & ocean currents • Upward movement of warm air/ downward movement of cold air creates wind currents • Cold water near the poles sinks eventually rising again in warmer regions creating ocean currents
