  1. DNA REPLICATION

  2. STRUCTURE DISCOVERY (don’t write!) • James Watson, Francis Crick • 1953

  3. DNA STRUCTURE • Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid • Repeating monomer (nucleotide): • Phosphate • Sugar • Base

  4. DNA STRUCTURE • Spiralling double helix • Complimentary bases pair up • Hydrogen bonds form between • Phosphate &sugar = backbone

  5. COMPLEMENTARY BASES • Purines • Adenine • Guanine • Pyrimidines • Cytosine • Thymine

  6. CELL DIVISION, DNA REPLICATION • Cells must divide (growth, repair, replace) • Before cells divide structures, organelles and DNA must be replicated • Each cells needs an exact, complete copy!

  7. DNA REPLICATION (DON'T WRITE!)

  8. DNA REPLICATION • Complimentary base pairing allows each strand to act as a template for the new strand • "Semiconservative" - new DNA is 1 parent, 1 new strand

  9. REPLICATION • Enzyme "helicase" unwinds and unzips helix

  10. REPLICATION • 2. Build new daughter strand • Line up base pairs • Enzyme : DNA polymerase

  11. REPLICATION • 3. Bond nucleotides together • Enzyme : DNA ligase

  12. TO DO'S • Provincial Qs and study guide questions • Dictionary • DNA polymerase, DNA ligase, semi conservative replication, helicase
