  2. Anti-Trust Caution GS1 and the GSMP operate under the GS1 anti-trust caution. Strict compliance with anti-trust laws is and always has been the policy of GS1. The best way to avoid problems is to remember that the purpose of the committee is to enhance the ability of all industry members to compete more efficiently. This means: • There shall be no discussion of prices, allocation of customers, or products, etc. • If any participant believes the group is drifting towards an impermissible discussion, the topic shall be tabled until the opinion of counsel can be obtained. • The full anti-trust caution is available in the Community Room if you would like to read it in its entirety

  14. In June 2009, with leadership from the Australian Food and Grocery Council leading manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and government agencies started collaborating to establish a single Web based portal for the management of Recall & Withdrawal notifications.

GS1 Recallnet - Project Overview Reduce inefficiencies & unnecessary costs for the industry through the application of a product recall portal to facilitate consistent data requirements & processes. Scope: • Initial assessment of the GS1 Product Recall web portal • Identification of local practices and development of industry requirements • Assessment of the industry adoption, including the financial arrangements. • Initial industry pilot and launch a production system to replace current manual process Deliverables: • A production Web based product recall and withdrawal portal • A commercial fee structure to support the portal on an ongoing basis • Industry commitment to implement and promote the update of the portal

At the same time…. • The ACCC was undertaking a review of the Australian product recall system • The review examined: • The existing consumer product recall system • The regulators involved in its oversight; and • The ways in which the risks associated with unsafe goods can be addressed by suppliers and regulators

Food Recalls are growing • Over 10,000 products recalls in Australia in the last 23 years (excluding withdrawals) • Food Product Recalls has steadily accounted for around 9% of all recalls • The review resulted in recommendations by ACCC to improve the recall process • Notification of the product recall • Communication of the product recall to consumers • Retrieval of the recalled product • Closure of a recall
