  1. #30 9-29-10 E.Q.: What is an indicator? Std. 7-5.6

  2. -Indicators are substances that can be used to determine whether a solution is acidic, basic, or neutral. Types of Indicators • Litmuspaper Has a special dye on it that changes colors in the presence of an acid or base. Blue litmus paper turns red in an acid and stays blue in a base. (Remember:Blue to RedAcid (BRA)) Red litmus paper turns blue in a base and stays red in an acid. (Remember: Red to BlueBase (RBB)) Blue and red litmus paper turn violet in a solution that is neutral (neither an acid or base).

  3. Types of Indicators (continued) 2. pHpaper • Has a range of colors depending on the pH of the solution. • The color of the paper is compared to the chart on the vial to determine the pH. 3. Phenolpthalein • Is used to test for the presence of a base. • It is a colorless chemical that turns magenta(bright pink) in a base. • Stays colorless in neutral or acidic solutions.

  4. LEARNING CHECK • In addition to pH, ________________ can be used to determine if a substance is an acid, base, or neutral solution. • ___________, ______________, and __________________ are types of indicators. • Which indicator turns red in the presence of an acid? a. pH paper c. red litmus paper b. blue litmus paper d. phenolpthalein • Which indicator turns deep pink (magenta) in the presence of a base? a. pH paper c. red litmus paper b. blue litmus paper d. phenolpthalein • Which indicator has a range of colors and can be used to identify the exact pH of a substance? a. pH paper c. red litmus paper b. blue litmus paper d. phenolpthalein • Which indicator turns blue in the presence of a base? a. pH paper c. red litmus paper b. blue litmus paper d. phenolpthalein • Which indicator stays colorless in neutral and acidic solutions? a. pH paper c. red litmus paper b. blue litmus paper d. phenolpthalein 8. Which indicators turn violet in neutral solutions? a. pH paper c. red litmus paper b. blue litmus paper d. phenolpthalein
