  1. Good News in a Bad News World Or Lifted Up after a Bad Fall Romans 5:12-21 Created By David Turner www.BibleStudies-Online.com

  2. The Genesis account of Adam is critical to understanding the New Testament • The account of Adam helps us to understand: • The Nature of God • The position and nature of man • The bad news of man’s fall • The good news of Jesus’ restoring man to righteousness

  3. We must believe the Bad News about Adam to grasp the Good News about Jesus (second Adam)

  4. Bad News - Sin and Death Reign Bad News #1 – Adam Sinned Bad News #2 – Adam Died because he sinned Bad News #3 – The result of Adam’s sin and death is we are sinners and we die

  5. Through Adam Sin and death came to all men. How did all sin? – two views: Federal Headship – Adam was the representative head of the race. What Adam did is charged to his posterity. Seminalism – The union between Adam and his posterity is biological and genetic such that Adam embodied all human beings in a single collective entity. Thus all people are co-sinners with Adam. Romans 5:12-21 (NET)12 So then, just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all people because all sinned – Hebrews 7:9-10 (NET)9 And it could be said that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid a tithe through Abraham. 10 For he was still in his ancestor Abraham’s loins when Melchizedek met him.

  6. Sin and death is not the result of the Mosaic Law 13 for before the law was given, sin was in the world, but there is no accounting for sin when there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam until Moses even over those who did not sin in the same way that Adam (who is a type of the coming one) transgressed.

  7. Contrast: Whereas, Adam’s disobedience (sin) brought death to all of us,Christ’s obedience provided us the gift of life.

  8. 15 But the gracious gift is not like the transgression. For if the many died through the transgression of the one man, how much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one man Jesus Christ multiply to the many!

  9. Contrast: Whereas, Adam’s disobedience (sin) brought judgment and condemnation,Christ’s obedience (in the context of many sins) provided us the gift of justification.

  10. 16 And the gift is not like the one who sinned. For judgment, resulting from the one transgression, led to condemnation, but the gracious gift from the many failures led to justification.

  11. Contrast: Whereas, Adam’s disobedience (sin) caused death to reign,Christ’s obedience (in the context of many sins) provided us the gift of righteousness to reign in our lives.

  12. 17 For if, by the transgression of the one man, death reigned through the one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ!

  13. Contrast: Whereas, Adam’s disobedience (sin) resulted in condemnation,Christ’s obedience offered us the gift of righteousness that leads to eternal life.

  14. 18 Consequently, just as condemnation for all people came through one transgression, so too through the one righteous act came righteousness leading to life for all people.

  15. Contrast: Whereas, Adam’s disobedience (sin) made many sinners,Christ’s obedience makes many righteous.

  16. Bad News vs. Good News 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of one man many will be made righteous.

  17. Contrast: Whereas, sin reigns in death,Christ’s grace reigns to bring eternal life.

  18. 20 Now the law came in so that the transgression may increase, but where sin increased, grace multiplied all the more, 21 so that just as sin reigned in death, so also grace will reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  19. The Bad News Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  20. The Bad News Romans 6:23a For the payoff of sin is death,

  21. The Good News Romans 6:23bbut the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

  22. The Good News Romans 5:6-86 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 (For rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person perhaps someone might possibly dare to die.) 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

  23. Christ Did it All Ephesians 2:8-9 8 For by grace you are saved through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 it is not from works, so that no one can boast.

  24. Receive the gift John 1:12 12 But to all who have received him – those who believe in his name – he has given the right to become God’s children
