  3. Today we will learnHow to set object's fixed size in 3ds Max

  4. Setting of an object • In this short video we are going to learn. How to set object value in 3Ds Max. First, we are going to learn how to see the measurement of an object then how see it size. Okay in my scene I have this console table .And for your information, I’m using centimeters as the system unit. Okay, this console table is an editable poly object so you will not. Find width, length or height value in the modify panel. To find out the measurement or the dimension of this object you can look at this utilities panel and choose this measure button. Make sure the object you want to measure is selected. Now you will see down here the X size, Y size, and the Z size.

  5. Measure Button • Okay. Now somehow you don’t see the measure button on here. Click this button up here, find measure at the left list and just click and drag into the button list at the right size. This should bring up the measure button back in the utilities panel again. Okay, so now we know that this object size in the rough dimension is roughly 200.5 cm. Let’s say we want to make the x dimension of this console table to be exactly 200 cm. Without the additional floating numbers. We can’t really depend on the scale tool as it is calculated based on percentage not fixed value. To set the fixed size of an object. You can say the tool called “Transform Toolbox”.

  6. Size Panel Group • Go to edit menu then choose “Transform Toolbox”. Note that the panel is open, notice in this panel we have so many tools available for us. Now I use Transform Toolbox panel a lot, as it really helps to speed up things related to transformation. I will discuss all of these tools in the next video. What we’re interested in now is this size panel group. Okay, we want to set the X dimension so set this to X. Then we want it to exactly 200 cm. As a whole number without any floating values. So type 200 in here. Next just click this ‘set size’ button, and as you can see in the measure utilities the X dimension now is exactly 200 cm.

  7. 3ds Max • Something to be aware though. In 3ds max 2015 which I currently use. When we hit this set size button 3ds max will resize the object using scale. Then automatically reset the transformation back so the object’s scale are all 100% again. Which is cool. We can see it if we go to scale and look at the value down here. They are all 100%. But in the prior version of 3ds max such as 2012. This is not the case.

  8. Reset Transformation • When you click the set size button in here the scale value will change. They will not be 100% uniformly any more. So you need to reset the transformation manually by clicking the R button in here. This button is called reset X form and X form here is actually stand for transform. You might be wondering. Why can’t I have scale value other than 100%? Well the short answer is: If you scale value is not 100%, you’ll get into trouble when modeling. You’ll get trouble also when animating hierarchies, I will discuss this scaling problem later in another video.
