  2. Programme of Session Introduction • Why use it • Where can the marks come from A Typical Process to Manage • Process considerations • EHU Experiences of use Data Management – In progress course Data Curation

  3. 2011-12 Annual Edge Hill University Student eLearning Survey Insight into our students’ experience and expectations of TEL 84% it is important to submit/collect assignments online. 42.7% that Online self-tests & quizzes are important “I find having access to lecture notes/slides enables me to reinforce any learning I have partaken in, and the quizzes/mocks are a useful way of checking learning is up to date.” The 5 Most Important Things My Lecturer Does Colin Gibson, SU President, Edge Hill University Students Union (2012) ‘…..how important the basic things are to students….’ • Submit online “… a little thing we changed which made a big difference to our student’s lives.” • LE ‘…really, really powerful use it! • LE ‘…for all info, not just PowerPoints! • Available, accessible and approachable Open calendar big ask!

  4. Increase use of EAMs ..... results in the increased use of the grade centre Positives • Less travel • More parking spaces! • Less paper • Anytime and anywhere Negatives • System down – Plan B • Internet access and device • More time on computer • More difficult to spread mark/review Student demands • NSS and local demand +

  5. Where do all these marks come from? Blackboard • Assignments • Tests • Surveys • Discussions • Journals • Blogs • Wikis Learning Edge • Turnitin • Assignment Handler • Campus Pack (Wikis, Blogs, Journals etc.) • Pebble Pad Offline • Performance • Viva • Artwork …and go to? • Grade Centre (Staff) • My Grades (Students)

  6. A Typical Process to Manage

  7. Start to finish considerations Set-up (start) Consistency - Follow Faculty/Department/Programme processes/guides (if nothing exists, start it) Testing - Add your ‘Test Student’ account to check operation Instructional text – Make sure there are adequate student instructions (one file, cover sheet, lates, Plan B etc) Student Experience Competent – Become familiar with your submission process to support your students Differences – There is no EHU/HE fixed submission process and all tools offer different functionality Formative/Survey – Some tools can offer students formative or survey processes Submission (due date) Attempts – Single or Multiple attempts Timing – Open for exam period or module duration Marking Auto/manual – Instance tests with predefined answers or delayed manual marking Online/Offline – Some tools offer either or both, central co-ordination advised Multiple markers – Central co-ordination is advised when you divide your marking Wait and hide - Don’t start marking until due date has passed and hide relevant columns Moderation What to send out – File/paper, including plagiarism detection etc Feedback and returns (post date) Data Management and Data Curation

  8. User Experiences FoHSC • Turnitin – Faculty wide adoption • Training and process consultancy • Consistency • Support • Evolution of central control and management • Assignment Handler – Portfoilio/Level wide adoption • Training and process consultancy • Mixed portfolio confusion (CPD and Pre-Reg) • Student/staff confusion (Which system and process) • Exams (A and P, Mat Pack, Manual Handling) • Set-up – Changing course teams • Data curation FoE • Pebble Pad, • Campus Pack

  9. Grade Centre Management

  10. Grade Centre Management Student View and Activity • Use ‘Add Test Student’ to preview submission and returns • Monitor student activity with the Performance Dashboard/Retention Centre Grade Centre Management • Add a new Column (offline marking or specific totals) • Overview of Manage options • Customising (Smart Views) • Hiding columns (from students/tutors) • How to grade in Grade Centre • Viewing Grades and ordering rows (Headers) Reporting and Monitoring • Create internal reports, work offline and rubrics

  11. Preview your course with ‘Add Test Student’ Go to the course: • Control Panel • Course Tools • Add Test Student • The panel opposite appears: Your student account name is: • YourLoginName_S (i.e. caina_s) You can add this student to any course you are an instructor on. Learning Edge: Add Test Student http://www.eshare.edgehill.ac.uk/1050/

  12. Monitor student activity with the Performance Dashboard and Retention Centre Performance Dashboard • Discussion contributions • Selectively released content • Direct access to Grade Centre • Individuals viewed content Blackboard OnDemand Video Guide Retention Centre (see Retention Centre and Grading Schema PowerPoint) • Missed Deadlines • Grades Alert • Activity Alert • Access Alert You can monitor different parameters

  13. Retention Centre Examples • Grades Highlight students with low scores so you can take remedial action or high scores to offer positive feedback. • Access Contact students that have not logged in for X weeks to remind them that participation is a required element of the course. • Due Dates Send a reminder to students to submit their overdue assignments, surveys or tests.

  14. Add an additional column Create (additional) Calculated Columns • Average Column • Minimum/Maximum Column • Total Column • Weighted Column Create (additional) Columns for ‘offline’ marking of a submission http://www.eshare.edgehill.ac.uk/3069/

  15. Manage Grade Centre - Options • Manage • Marking Periods (Large Cohorts) • Grading Schema (% = A, B or Merit) • Grading Colour Codes (In Progress, Needs Marking etc.) • Categories (Performance, Art work, Presentation etc.) • Smart Views (next slide) • Column Organisation (Organise how information is viewed Important!) • Row Visibility (students, users) • Email (test first)

  16. Filter Grade Book information with Smart Views • View a sub-section of the Full Grade Centre. • Great for large cohorts and multiple tutors. • Can be created to filter by: • Group • Specified Performance • User (manually select a number of users) • Category / Status (eg. needs marking) • Custom (A combination of filters) BB On Demand http://ondemand.blackboard.com/r91/movies/bb91_grade_center_create_smart_views.htm

  17. Hiding Columns (and markers) • Anonymous Grading – (Tests) BB On Demand – Anonymous Grading http://ondemand.blackboard.com/r91/movies/bb91_grade_center_anonymous_grading.htm • Hiding a Column from a student (Important! …details on next slide) • Hiding a Column from a tutor BB On Demand - Hide and reveal columns to instructors (this doesn’t hide it from students) http://ondemand.blackboard.com/r91/movies/bb91_grade_center_customizing_grade_center_view.htm

  18. Hiding a column from a student Why Premature release of results through ‘My Grades’ from Turnitin and (Blackboard) Assignment All other Blackboard assessment methods/tools and Assignment Handler are OK When During any marking/moderation periods How Option 1 – Show/Hide Column to Users/Students, all columns (incl. Total/Weighed Total columns) Full Grade Centre/Edit Column Information/Show this Column to Students (or ’Show/Hide to Users’) (LTD3036 Hiding a Column from Student View http://www.eshare.edgehill.ac.uk/3068/) Option 2 – Hide individual columns to Students and exclude Grade Centre Calculations (Advised, if appropriate) Hiding columns in the grade centre to prevent premature access… (Video) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8K190L0-PM&list=PLf2DpCVwuXlyIRjpvkVsabK6Owji82WqB&index=3 Grades being released too early? http://blogs.edgehill.ac.uk/learningedge/2013/03/22/grades-being-released-too-early/

  19. How to grade directly into the Grade Centre Click on the table corresponding to the students and the assignment Enter a mark and press return To enter a ‘Quick Comment’ Click on the Chevron next top the mark Select ‘Quick Comment’ and enter; Feedback to User Grading Notes

  20. Viewing Grades and ordering Users (rows) Ordering Users (Rows) View Grade Details BB On Demand - http://ondemand.blackboard.com/r91/movies/bb91_grade_center_viewing_grade_details.htm

  21. Creating reports, work offline and Rubrics Creating a Grade Centre Report BB On Demand - http://ondemand.blackboard.com/r91/movies/bb91_grade_center_create_report.htm Work offline – Upload external data and download internal data. As it is critical that data must be formatted correctly to sync, if you wish to use this feature we would be happy to advise. Use a Grading Schema (see Retention Centre and Grading Schema PowerPoint) Creating a Grading Rubric BB On Demand - http://ondemand.blackboard.com/r91/movies/bb91_grade_center_creating_a_rubric.htm

  22. Data Curation

  23. Data Curation Why • Blackboard upgrades (changes to existing VLE (5yr Licence)) • Data storage/archive - how long courses will remain available for • Details transferred to SID ASAP (BB is not an alternative to SID) How • Don’t change policy (or get lazy) just because its online (but digital stuff lasts forever … doesn’t it?) • Analysis future needs, by what you have done in the past • Export data and archive it with in departments/faculties • Create reports at Grade Centre level and download/copy individuals work at tool level (i.e. Turnitin)
