  2. Our Adversary, the Devil • Ready to devour us 1 Pet. 5:8 • Can resist him steadfast in the faith, 1 Pet. 5:9 • The way of escape 1 Cor. 10:12-13 • We can equip ourselves to resist and escape (Eph. 6:10-13) Deceives the whole world Revelation 12:9

  3. God’s command, Josh. 6:18 • Achan’s sin, Josh. 7:1 • Affected the entire camp of Israel, Josh. 7:2-9 • Our sins bring consequences beyond ourselves

And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel and this is what I have done… (Josh. 7:20) Achan’s Journey Toward Sin and the Way of Escape • “I saw it”, Josh. 7:21 • Sensory perception, 2 Sam. 11:2; 1 Jno. 2:16 • Moment of curiosity, wonderment, exploration and excitement – Beware and be warned!

And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel and this is what I have done… (Josh. 7:20) Achan’s Journey Toward Sin and the Way of Escape • The way of escape: • Make a covenant with your eyes, Job 31:1 • Do not put yourself in the middle of temptation, Psa. 1:1-2; 26:4-5 (1 Cor. 15:33) • Be doing God’s work, 2 Sam. 11:1; 1 Ths. 5:5-7

And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel and this is what I have done… (Josh. 7:20) Achan’s Journey Toward Sin and the Way of Escape • The way of escape: • Control your mind, Phil. 4:8; Col. 3:1-3 • Put covetousness to death, Col. 3:5 • Take control of your body, 1 Cor. 6:20 (Rom. 6:13) • Use God’s word, Psa. 119:9-16; Heb. 4:12

And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel and this is what I have done… (Josh. 7:20) Achan’s Journey Toward Sin and the Way of Escape • “I hid it”, Josh. 7:21; Gen. 3:8; Jno. 3:19-20 (2 Sam. 11:6-26, 27; Psa. 32:1-4) • Your sin will “find you out”, Num. 32:23 • Nothing is hidden from God, Heb. 4:13

And Achan answered Joshua and said, “Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel and this is what I have done… (Josh. 7:20) Achan’s Journey Toward Sin and the Way of Escape • The way of escape: • Christian: Confess sin to God, Josh. 7:19; Psa. 32:5; 1 Jno. 1:9 (Acts 8:22) • Lost sinner: Believe, confess Christ, repent and be baptized, Acts 2:36-38, 41

By yielding to sin we become accursed and we trouble the people of God, Josh. 6:18; 7:1 • Sin in the camp started with sin in the heart of one man • Led to the death of 36 men, Josh. 7:5 • Finally, to the death of Achan and his family in judgment, Josh. 7:25 • We will perish in eternal fire unless we take the God-given ways of escape from sin
