  2. ENGLISH ARTICLES • There are two articles in English: • definite article (the) • indefinite article (a/an) • Pronounciation: the /ðə; ðɪ/ a /ə; ən/ canvas artist camera artpiece design exhibition motif interval brush image shade element print honour sculpture hour

  3. ENGLISH ARTICLESThe use of the definite article 1. Before common nouns in a particular sense: a) The photographer you saw is our teacher. b) The sculpture in front of them is mine. 2. 1st time – indefinite; thereafter – definite a) My colleague has just finished a self-portrait. The self-portrait is phenomenal! b) I bought a triptychin a gallery the other day. The triptych was made by a famous impressionist.

  4. ENGLISH ARTICLESThe use of the definite article 3. Before common nouns to indicate the whole class: a) The photography is a visual medium. 4. Before the superlative: a) This is the most avant-garde pottery I‘ve seen. b) Her brushwork is the smoothest ever! 5. Before ordinal numbers: a) We won the first prize at the furniture fair. b) He is the seventh participant at the event.

Before surnames in plural to indicate the whole family: a) The Smiths are well-known for fabulous office interior design. b) Do the Romanovs finance fashion events in Rome?

Before the names of public buildings, cinemas, museums, galleries, theatres: The Belgrade Drama Theatre, The National Gallery, The Museum of Applied Art, The Odeon, The Houses of Parliament, The Tate (Gallery)

Before the names of musical instruments used in general sense: a) Do you play the violin? b) She has played the cello since her early days. 14.With the phrases: the same; all the time, by the way, at (in) the end, at (in) the beginning, half the time, half the way, to have the honour of, etc.

Before abstract and mass nouns used in general sense: Time is money; Life is short; She likes music; I will have bread and butter; Can I have a glass of water, please? We order plaster at Charlie’s. Note! General → Particular The life of many famous artists was hard. The music of Vivaldi is outstanding. The bread is in the fridge. The plaster we used for restoration last time is bad.

Before the names of meals used in general sense: a) At what time did Picasso usually have lunch? b) We will discuss the fabrics at dinner. c) What will you have for breakfast? Note! General → Particular a) The lunch we had at Majestic was awesome. b) We were at the dinner given in the honour of our famous sculptor, Ryan Flatley. c) The breakfast at the Arte club was too heavy.

Before the nouns school, college, hospital, home, prison, church, table, bed indicating the use of the object or building: a) We are at school now. b) He was in hospital for five weeks. c) A textile designer left college two months ago. Note! The use of the object → Object as such a) He threw his brushes over the top of the school. b) The college is not far away from my flat. c) I have been to the hospital to visit him.

Before the names of bridges, squares, parks, airports, railway stations: Tower Bridge, Republic Square, Hyde Park, Prokop Railway Station, Nikola Tesla Airport, Victoria Station, Gatwick 5. By day, by night, at noon, at dawn BUT: In the morning/evening/afternoon; During the day/night

  14. ENGLISH ARTICLESThe use of the indefinite article 1. The indefinite article is used only in the singular: a) It’s a nice piece of art. b) Bravo, you have finally used a vibrant colour! c) This is not an elongated shape. 2. Before the common nouns to indicate the whole class: a) A dog is a faithful animal. b) A bird has two legs and two wings.

Before hundred, thousand, million, dozen, instead of one: a) This sculpture is worth a million and a half. b) It looks like a dozen new shapes have been used. 4. Before names of nationalities to indicate one person: a Serb, a German, an Italian, a Japanese, a Thai
